Meet The Bloggers – Kelly and Zoey

Following on in my Meet The Blogger series, today I am introducing you to Kelly and Zoey who blogs over at Our Transitional Life.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

We’re Kelly and Zoey, and we live in Cardiff (South Wales) with our two children, George and Molly, and our labradoodle, Ziggy.

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?

We started this blog a few months after Zoey came out as transgender. We thought it was better to own who we are, rather than hide away. We want to normalise our family, and create a more accepting world, as well as help other people rock being who they are!

HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

We have two other blogs, one for home education (rebeltribeblog.com), and our oldest one all about lifestyle and writing (kellyallenwriter.com), so yes we’ve put more energy into our new blog and now it’s LGBTQ+ family inspired work, as opposed to our family arrangement a year or so ago. It’s a positive and happy change though!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

Probably being offered ‘exposure’ for work! I think you reach a point when you realise doing things for ‘free’ all the time isn’t actually fair, and when you start to realise this, things start to change, financially and confidence wise. As for haha-funny, we’d probably say anytime we work with Bluestone and go to their quiz night and try our best to win but always lose – it’s always a lot of fun!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

Probably working with poor and unprofessional PR Companies. We once worked with a company and gave them a lot of FREE work, in exchange for nothing at times. When I had my light-bulb moment (work isn’t free) they went silent and refuse to work with us nowadays. The positive is that we know our worth, and that’s what we try to remember when we’re excluded from this company’s events and collaborations.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?

Know your worth. Yes, do charity work for free if you feel the vibe, do any work for free if you think it fits and it makes you feel good, but don’t let people take advantage. Blogging is hard work, and it should be rewarded. Good PR companies will understand this, and work with you time and time again…

WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?

How much we’d learn! We genuinely do not believe a non-blogger would understand most of the things bloggers have to do or know, such as Google Analytics, Domain Authority, Keywords… We really should give ourselves more credit!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

We like to go shopping! And watch movies, and spend time together as a family doing simple, easy and inexpensive things!

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?

Buy a house! We’ve rented for over 11 years, it would be so nice to have a home we could make our own.

WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?

Aby Moore. She’s honest, kind, and she rocks everything she puts her mind to!

  1. Great read. Having only started my blog last week I was particularly interested in the thoughts about the challenge of learning analytics and keywords. Slowly learning myself and glad to see other great bloggers faced the same experience.

  2. I love this type of post, love finding out about other bloggers! Hey Kelly and Zoey!
Had to giggle at the ‘free exposure’ mention… if only Tesco accepted that, we would all be laughing! 😉 Sim x

  3. Brilliant read. I really liked your questions. I am going to head over and check the ladies out as they are new to me. Feels like a good way to get to know them both x x

  4. Aw, they sound lovely! I would love to meet them. I wish them the best of luck on their blog. It makes me so happy to hear about families with transgendered parents or children and being so open about it. I have transgendered nephews and I’m always hoping the world is open and loving towards them.

  5. Interesting read and nice to meet new bloggers. Glad to hear Kelly and Zoey stopped working with those that were taking advantage of them.

  6. 100% agree about not working for exposure, there are very few opportunities when this is worthwhile and we have to know our worth x

  7. I would like to read Kelly and Zoey’s blog, I think it’s quite unique. I agree as well with not working for free, every brand has budgets, they are just trying to spend it on something else. You don’t pay your bills with exposure, why work for it?
