Meet The Blogger - Victoria

Following on in my Meet The Blogger series, today I am introducing you to Victoria who blogs over at lyliarose, healthyvix and travelvixta

Victoria

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

Hi, my name is Victoria and I am a full-time blogger from Gloucestershire in the UK. I write three of my own blogs with the main one being www.lyliarose.com and I also run my husband’s blog which keeps me very busy! I’m also a mum to two children, a boy and a girl who are currently four years old and almost seven years old. Aside from blogging I am passionate about healthy living and follow a vegan diet as well as going to the gym several times a week to run. If I have any spare time then I love going to the countryside to walk through forests, climb mountains and explore beaches.

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?

I started blogging in 2013 for my original business which was selling jewellery online.  So I started a blog to get more content on my website to try and attract more visitors and hopefully shoppers. I quickly ran out of blog posts that were relevant to my business, but I loved to write so I started blogging about lifestyle topics instead. I always say I accidentally became a blogger! Blogging took over my life and my website and now my shop doesn’t even exist anymore.

HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

At first it was a business blog, then I tried to have a fashion and beauty blog, but that really wasn’t ‘me’. I then started writing about my lifestyle and absolutely fell in love with blogging. This was the turning point for me. I wrote about a lot of different topics and even parenting at one point, but again I changed the blog as I grew and changed and began to focus on the topics that I was most passionate about at that point in my life. Now my blog is a money and lifestyle blog where most of the content has a money angle.

I did set up separate blogs such as www.healthyvix.com to focus on my other passions such as healthy living, rather than keeping it all on my main blog as I still want to write about other things too. My Lylia Rose blog has definitely gone through changes as I have in my own life and now I think I’ve finally settled on a niche and topic!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

Oh gosh, probably all the ridiculous offers I get from people day in day out who want to work with my blog, such as marketing companies, but they only want to offer $2 for 1-2 hours of my time. It’s quite laughable and I guess it’s just freelancer life – people constantly messaging expecting work for free.

One brand did once send me 2 bags of regular sized crisps expecting me to review them which was also quite funny. I thought they’d at least send a box of crisps, not just two small squished packets in an envelope!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
Not being paid by a brand. It recently happened directly with a brand for the first time in my six years of blogging and it was really frustrating. There’s not much protection in place to cover self-employed people for non payment. I could have paid to do small claims, but then what if they still didn’t pay? They refused to pay even after I sent a letter of intent for claiming, so they really weren’t going to pay. Luckily it’s a rarity and most brands are honest.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?

Don’t worry about being perfect when you start blogging. It can take time to find your writing style, voice and even your most passionate topics. That’s OK. Don’t feel pressured to have to know it all when you start. The best thing is to get started and used to blogging and work it all out as you go. If you’re like me then you’ll change as you grow as a person anyway and interests change.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?

That I could turn it into a full-time living. I had no idea. Originally I thought it was just a way to put content on a website. I had no idea about having a website that’s purely a blog and I definitely had no idea it could be a way to make money.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I love to go to the gym and run, travel and explore the countryside. I also love family days out with my husband and children.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?

I’d book an African safari! It’s my top item on my bucket list. I want to stay in the Treetops hotel in Kenya for a part of it. Then some luxurious accommodation with a hot tub under the stars for the second part of the trip.

WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?

I find Michelle from Making Sense of Cents really inspiring. She’s in the US and makes around $100,000 from her blog per month which is crazy figures. But shows that anything is possible with a blog! It can be a serious business.

Knowing that you’ve changed your blog niche a few times makes me feel a bit better. I want to change mine because I’m not as passionate about my current topic as I once was.

I can relate to that thing about not being paid by a brand. They looked like they were easy to work with and then when I sent the invoice, bang! Nothing. They disappeared. Very frustrating indeed. I can relate with many of Victoria’s experiences in this blogging world. Thanks for sharing her story.

It’s nice to meet you, Victoria! You are definitely one busy woman! I appreciate your advise for those who are starting. I stopped blogging in 2014 and have just restarted it. Feels like dusting an old room, I’m just starting to get used to it again. The tasks are neverending, but like you said, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just keep working on it, and you’ll get there.

Welcome back to blogging , it is never ending but take it one step at a time and you will get there x

It was a joy learning about Victoria. I love learning about people in general, but bloggers are especially interested because I always want to know the reason someone started blogging. I admire her and have to check out her blog.

It’s super cool how she found joy in writing and moved to a lifestyle blog! Just because she hit a wall with her original niche, didnt mean that she had to stop blogging. Love it!

I think you can turn your blogging around if you hit a wall, it is all about writing from the heart
