Meet The Blogger – Nina
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
Hi! My name is Nina and I’m a travel/fashion blogger living in Spain. I’m originally from Cincinnati, Ohio in the US, but I moved to Spain 2.5 years ago to work as an English teacher. I spent two years in the south of Spain in Granada and now I live in La Rioja, which is in the north. I almost always wear a dress, which is where the blog name comes from. I write about fashion, travel and life as an expat in Spain.
WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?
I started 3.5 years ago because I simply wanted a creative outlet. I always loved writing. My initial idea was to interview women in dresses around the world. Since then, my blog has morphed into something a little bit different.
HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?
It used to be Q&As with women in dresses. I would definitely still do that, I just focus more on travel and personal style.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
Part of travel blogging means pitching hotels and tour companies about collaborations. Get prepared for rejection because you get a lot of nos. That really doesn’t bother me. However I remember I pitched a hotel in Lisbon and the pr guy responded telling me that a collaboration with me would be “inappropriate.” I didn’t realize that I was such a scandalous person. I know that what he meant to say was simply that they worked with bloggers with larger followings than me. I just chalked it up to the fact that English likely wasn’t his first language.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
Well my mom passed away about six months after I started my blog. She was in the hospital after having a brain aneurysm when I first started it. It was kind of surreal because when she was healthy, she loved my writing. I studied journalism in college and wrote for the student newspaper. While she could have read it online, she got a subscription so she could have physical copies of my articles. I knew that if she was alive today, she would have read every single post I’ve written and probably commented on most of them as well. Losing a parent in general is hard. It sucks even more when you think of how much of a supporter she would have been.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?
I would suggest set a schedule and try not to focus on everything. Focus on getting good content out there and building connections with other bloggers. Join Facebook groups, find people on Instagram and talk with them. Build those connections.
WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?
How much work goes into just creating content. It felt like I spent all weekend writing my latest post. I had so much content from a collaboration that I did in January.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I love to travel and explore new things. I feel like there’s always something new to explore.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?
I would buy a house in either Portugal or Spain. Apparently in both of those countries, you get residency for buying property (it has to be a certain amount and there are other guidelines). This then would allow me to live in Europe for as long as I want and create sort of a home base here.
WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?
My friend Ana from Faded Spring (https://fadedspring.co.uk/). I’ve always admired how real she is. She’s not afraid to blog about tough issues such as depression and bullying. She uses her story to connect with people in similar situations. On top of all that, her personal style is awesome! I’ve actually had the pleasure of meeting her in person twice the last two times I was in London and she’s incredibly down to earth. I’m sure if I lived in London, we’d hang out all the time and help each other with blog stuff.
