Hi I’m Emma, photo taker, baby maker and full time PA to two cheeky little rascals Ettie and Ollie. My blog is a light hearted, friendly place focusing on life as a parent in the modern day world. I cover everything from fashion and interiors to travel and days out. I also run a monthly guest post series where I ask Mums to share a little on how they manage to juggle work / life / friends and family. Its a series I’ve affectionately termed The Mummy Juggle.HOW OR

I started blogging by accident really. I read a post by one of my favourite Instagram accounts about her little boy who had contracted Strep B. I really wanted to comment on the post but couldn’t unless I had a WordPress account so signed up. Once I started to have a look around, I thought it would be a good place to record all of my memories. With my daughter Ettie, and so the first variation of my blog ‘Ettie and Me’ was born.

Has Your Blog Changed Since You First Started?

Yes as I touched on in the last question, my blog started life as Ettie and It was my small space on the web to record my thoughts and feelings on life and my adventures with my little girl Ettie who was one at the time. As time went on I began to realise that there were lots of other things to write about that weren’t so focussed on my daughter. I also fell pregnant and felt a little funny about having one of my babies in the title and not the other.

So I rebranded recently to the Halcyon Years. The word Halcyon refers to a ‘period of time in the past that was idyllic and peaceful’. Ok so life with two small children isn’t exactly peaceful. But I know deep down that these years whilst they are small and at home with me are going to be the best of my life and so I wanted the name of my blog to reflect that.

What Has Been Your Funniest Moment Since Starting Your Blog?

Ooh tough question, I can’t really think of anything that has been hilariously funny. I once received an email asking if I would like to go on a date. To which I replied ‘erm no thankyou I’m a happily married woman’. Only to discover in the next email that the ‘date’ was actually for me and my husband to trial out a new dating service in the area.

What Has Been Your Worst Moment Since Starting Your Blog?

Luckily there haven’t been too many bad moments since I started blogging. I think the hardest thing has been trying to save face and look confident in front of friends. Who I know really don’t understand the blogging world and how (or why) anyone would like to make money from it. I think I’ve lost a couple of friendships through it.  This is mainly through lack of understanding. But I’ve made sooo many more, so the two have evened each other out.

What Advice Would You Give To A New Blogger Starting Out?

Just do it, don’t waste time procrastinating, if you have something to say, get your words down and promote them later. You can learn as you go and there are so many amazing people out there to support you.

What Surprised You About Blogging That You Did Not Realise Before You Started?

I didn’t realise how all encompassing it would be! Naively when I started out I thought I could pop a few words down once a week and that would be my work done. But its soo much more than that. Over my two years of blogging I’ve learned all out self promotion, photo editing, HTML, building a website, SEO, DA, Instagram stories, the Instagram Algorithm and I could go on!! The more I seem to learn, the more I realise how much more I still need to learn! its an ongoing cycle, but I love it!

What Do You Like To Do In Your Spare Time?

I used to say blog when I got asked this question. But actually that takes up more of my spare time now! When I do get a spare five minutes I love to watch a good period drama with a cup of tea and a biscuit! (Gosh that sounds so old!) ha

If You Won The Lottery What Would You Do First?

Without a doubt take the whole of my family on a hot sunny holiday! Hire a villa somewhere so all the cousins could play together but also somewhere us grown ups could have a drink in the sun

Who Is Your Blogging Hero And Why?

I have two… I love Katie from MummyDaddyandMe because she seems to be such a lovely person. I think our parenting styles are similar and I love how she captures the happiness of motherhood in her captions and style of writing. I also love Cara Sutherland for her humour , outfits and house!

I agree with Emma about talking to others about blogging and how they just can’t wrap their minds around how a person can make money on it and how it’s a waste of time, and they don’t see it as a real job, etc… Most bloggers can relate to one another ; )
    Fun read!
