How to refresh your garden fence

Now that the colder months have arrived, the last thing on your mind is to give your back garden some attention. What if I told you that right now is the best time to give your garden an uplift, and while you are at it, don’t forget the garden fence.

Fences are an essential part of your outdoor space – they offer privacy, keep your pets out of trouble and help keep your home safe. Maybe you have an ugly fence, maybe you have a damaged fence, maybe your fence just doesn’t match the rest of your outdoor space. Do something about it! Instead of hiding your ugly fence, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and transform it into a beautiful fence that perfectly adorns your garden.

Do you have a flimsy fence?

It’s time to make it strong and able to withstand all the elements. Speedy Fixings recommend fence post shoes to add extra stability and support to the wooden posts of fences and other outdoor structures, such as gazebos and pergolas. Also known as post supports, post shoes are metal shoes designed for wooden posts. These also protect posts from insect damage, water damage and fungal damage. So, not only do post shoes make your fence stronger but will also make it long-lasting.

Do you have a damaged fence?

If your garden fence has been damaged, you have two choices: repairing it or replacing it. Perhaps your fence has started to lean, it has to be repaired as soon as possible – if your leaning fence is left unrepaired, it can lead to more expensive fence repairs or replacements.

Do you have an old and discoloured fence?

The beautiful wooden fence that was in your garden when you first moved in has now turned into a grey and discoloured fence – don’t worry. All you need is a power washer and some oil stain to make it look brand-new again.

As this article on the Family Handyman says, “All you have to do is remove the surface layer of aged wood cells to expose a fresh layer of wood. With a power washer, it’s as easy as washing your car. Then apply an exterior wood oil fence stain to preserve this new layer of wood. It’ll prolong the life of your fence to boot.”

Do you have an ugly fence?

Is your fence an eye-sore that doesn’t match your modern garden? Time for a lick of paint. With some paint, you will not only make your fence complement your garden but it will also stand out and uplift your whole back garden look.

If you are unsure of what colour to paint your fence, go for a colour that you’d enjoy seeing more of in your back garden. “The choices for colours are endless – you can go for a traditional white picket fence, you can make it bright and playful by painting it yellow, you can make it modern and sleek by painting it black… your choice!” comments Victoria’s Vintage.
