I was just scrolling through Facebook while I had my lunch, and a topic regarding a soap came up. It has very split results and got me thinking about the moral dilemma. I love my soaps and how they tackle real life events. Such as when a lie becomes reality – who is in the wrong?

The Story Line
Coronation Street is a British Soap that has been on our screens since the 1960’s. In a current story line a baby has been born following a one night stand. The one night stand happened between two soap regulars who had kept it secret from their partners. Wanting to put it behind them and move on. Only a baby has been born and the secret came out.
Aby
Aby is a recovering drug addict, she had gave her twins up for adoption, thinking they would get a much better life without her. Although it broke her heart, she did it for them. She had an older son Seb who was killed following an attack last year.
The death of her son destroyed Aby, and for a while went into self destruct mode. During this time, she had a one night stand.
She put this behind her and started to put her life back, and married and settled into family life with her husband and stepson. This did not last for long, when Aby’s husband overheard a conversation about Aby having a one night stand. This caused a huge blow to their relationship, and her husband went away to clear his head. During this time Aby did return to alcohol and drugs. This caused her to go into premature labour with her son, who was conceived during the one night stand.
Now she is having to watch her baby, who has already had an operation, fight for his life. Plus having to face losing him as social services are involved.
Toyah
Toyah, is the partner of the other person in the one night stand. She can not conceive children, and is desperate to become a Mum. The couple have become Foster Parents and the current child they foster, they have the opportunity to adopt.
Toyah is finally getting her dream of becoming a Mum.
Toyah becomes involved in helping Aby, accept she has a newborn baby, after she ran from hospital. She supported her, and put her life on hold to be with Aby, as her son clung onto life. All the time not knowing that her partner was the father.
Finding Out
After Toyah bumped into Aby, spilling a drink on her. Aby got weird over a package she had in her bag. Later telling Aby’s estranged husband, who then went around to check Aby was not on drugs again. The contents of the envelope was not drugs but, the birth certificate with both parents named. Who he told Toyah straight away.
At the same time, Toyah was heading to a meeting to finalise talking about the adoption. Where she let out she knew everything, putting the adoption on hold.
This has resulted in the child they were adopting going to new parents for adoption, and Toyah losing her dream.
The Dilema
Who is the one who needs the support?
Aby was in self destruct following the attack and death of her son. She was not thinking and wanted to punish herself in a way. She did not realise she was pregnant. Aby realises that her baby is a way for her to move forward, to put the past behind her and be a good Mum.
Toyah who desperately wants a family of her own, has that yearning that is there every day. Who feels she has had the deception from both her partner and friend who were keeping a secret.
My opinion
I had not really thought of this as I mentioned earlier, it was only by scrolling on Facebook I saw how much people were divided in this. Some of you will have seen my posts on my heartache at wanting to become a mum. It eats at you every minute of every day. I feel for Toyah, I also feel for Aby, yes she was wrong to have a one night stand but she was not herself, she was in self destruct. Having very strong opinions on right and wrong, but do have empathy and try to look at the bigger picture of things.
I love soaps as it is my switch off, but love the story lines where they tackle various situations and gets you thinking about different situations. The one thing that should not be forgotten is the baby he is innocent in all of this.

I don’t watch Coronation Street but watch Eastenders. The story lines are usually very far out from reality but sometimes they have an element of ‘this really could happen’. Thanks for this post.
I watch Eastenders as well, and do love how they tackle stories, am loving the story line in Eastenders at the moment as well
I used to love watching soaps and was a big fan of emmerdale, eastenders and coronation Street but since they all stopped after covid I didn’t start watching again , I do miss them though
I love my soaps and the story lines that they tackle x
Oh wow, I felt it for Toyah. Life does deal up some very challenging situations especially when someone you love is involved.
I felt for her as well, but now I am feeling sorry for Aby
Ooh now this sounds like a good one! Soaps honestly can be so much fun to watch and really addicting but I love unpredictable plot twists. This one really does get you thinking though!
This is quite a strong story line and does get people thinking and talking, with more twists this past week as well x
I don’t watch Coronation Street but know a lot of people do as the stories are so close to real life events. It does make you think.
I watch all the soaps, it does make you think and wonder who you feel sorry for. It also gets you thinking about things you never thought about before
I haven’t heard of this soap, and I can see where you are coming from on being divided. Great article on the topic and it also made me kind of want to check out the soap more.
I love soaps for tacking situations, this one is dividing everyone but no one is talking about the dad
I love soaps too. I prefer watching Eastenders, but it’s interesting to hear what’s been happening on Coronation Street since I last watched it too.
I love my soaps and loving the storyline in Eastenders at the moment as well with Stuart and alternative cancer treatment. I am a soapaholic I have to admit
I haven’t seen this soap but I really feel for the kid. Kids often end up paying the price…so sad…
I think the baby will be ok but it is true they are often the innocent part that does suffer
I think Imran needs to be put into this equation. I think he was more in the wrong than both Aby and Toyah. Aby was in a bad place, in self destruciton mode and it is sort of understandable that she was just looking for comfort but Imran didn’t need to be the one to give her it. I think both Aby and Toyah need support but more so Toyah, apart from the baby she is the most innocent in all of this. At the moment she has lost her partner, friend and the foster child.
I’ve read the spoilers so I know what’s coming up and I think I am going to start hating Imran even more than I do. hehehe x
I was trying to see if from both Toyah and Aby’s side, as Imran is the guilty one in the wrong. I haven’t read any spoilers although my Mum usually tells me
I think this is one of the positives of soaps, they get you to think about what you’d do in that situation or what the best course of action is. Even if the situation is quite absurd x
I love my soaps as do love that they tackle various situations, they do get people talking
