You accumulate more and more belongings as you go through life. Every birthday and Christmas adds to the immense pile in storage. When you have kids, this problem becomes chronic. Toys, clothes, cots, books, furniture… the list goes on. As such, parents need to buy a property with plenty of storage. Ideally, each bedroom should have enough space for a wardrobe and chest of drawers. Having cupboards throughout the house is also immensely helpful. A lot of new homeowners and parents seem to overlook this issue, only for it to become their undoing later on. Don’t fail victim yourself! Plan in advance for your children growing up and amassing loads of stuff.

A Decent Location for Children

Location is one of the biggest factors to consider when looking for a new home, especially if you have young children. Ideally, you will want to find somewhere that is close to the local school, so you don’t have to travel far to drop your kids off. In addition to this, we suggest avoiding areas that are near busy roads. Not only can a lot of traffic disrupt your sleep, but it might also be dangerous for your children when playing outside. Talking about the outside, properties with green space in the surrounding area are also desirable. Children need fresh air and somewhere to channel all their extra energy. Parents should look at the nearby infrastructure as well. Are there any supermarkets within walking distance? What about transport links? And don’t forget about parking space! Appropriately Sized Kitchen

Feeding a family is no mean feat and so you need a kitchen that is up to the job. When browsing for properties, this is something to keep in mind. A larger kitchen is best, with lots of surface space for food preparation. If you love cooking and baking with your kids, this is a must. Even more importantly, parents should look for a kitchen that is fitted with loads of storage space. You’ll need cupboards for your pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, and so on. Let’s not forget about a huge fridge freezer. Where else are you going to store all the food you need to feed your ravenous family? Parents might also benefit from having a pantry, though this isn’t a necessity. We also suggest looking at the flooring that comes with the kitchen. If the flooring isn’t water-resistant (this is a must for messy kids), then you may need to install a replacement, which can be costly. Of course, this isn’t a make-or-break factor. Just something to consider.

Safe and Secure

Nothing is more important than the safety of our children. As such, when looking for a new family home, this needs to be at the forefront of your mind. Like we mentioned before, avoiding areas with busy roads nearby is a good idea. As well as this, you should consider stairs. If you are moving into a house, inevitably there will be a flight of them. Avoid any properties with wooden or marble stairs – this is an accident waiting to happen. Also, staircases without handrails or dangerous drops are a no-go. Alongside this, we suggest looking at the overall security of the property. Could intruders easily break in through the back garden? What about the front of the house?

Outdoor Play Areas

When choosing a family home, you ideally want to find somewhere with a back garden that is nicely fenced off – providing shelter, privacy, and preventing your children from running off! As kids need enough space to play, try going for properties with larger gardens. Is there enough room for playsets, like swings or football goals? Moreover, it’s a good idea to find back gardens with soft grass instead of concrete or slippery wood planks. Once again, this increases the likelihood of your child having a nasty injury.
