It’s common for new mums to find that their self-confidence takes something of a nosedive after they give birth. This isn’t surprising, given how much having a baby changes your life! The good news is that there are effective ways to boost your self-confidence and get you back to feeling like your old self – or even better! Here are five of the best.

Tackle the root causes of your low self-esteem

To truly deal with your low confidence, it’s vital to understand what’s causing it. This will enable you to develop a strategy to tackle it head-on. For example, are you worried about your parenting abilities? Find some books, podcasts, and other resources to boost your baby knowledge. Has pregnancy left you with thinning hair? Get a consultation about effective procedures that won’t leave you with a hair transplant scar. Are you feeling unattractive physically? Join a post-natal exercise class. Every problem has a solution!
Fake it ‘til you make it

Increased self-confidence doesn’t usually happen overnight. However, the sooner you start acting like a confident person, the sooner you’re likely to feel more confident genuinely. Some of the ways you can do this include dressing the part by wearing well-fitting and smart clothes, adopting an assertive posture by standing up straight and holding your head high, and using positive self-talk to build up your inner confidence.
Stop comparing yourself to others

Comparing yourself to other mums with perfect lives is one of the quickest ways to tank your confidence. Social media can be particularly problematic for this, but try to remember that everything you see on there is carefully curated and doesn’t tell the whole truth. You can, of course, learn valuable parenting tips from others, but remember that motherhood is not a competition.
Find your community

A lot of new mums find that they feel lonely and isolated after giving birth. This might be because you’re at home all day by yourself, can’t do the activities you used to, or don’t have time to meet your friends as often. Or perhaps you don’t know anyone else with young children and have no one to talk to about parenting issues. If this sounds familiar, finding a community of mums to connect with can be helpful. This could be in your local area or online if that’s more feasible for you.
Make your mental health a priority

Your mental well-being can greatly impact your self-confidence, so looking after it must be a priority for all mums. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Meditate for five minutes a day
- Do a breathing exercise when you feel stressed
- Try an adult coloring book to reduce anxiety
- Take a long walk in the countryside
- Journal to work through negative thoughts about your self-confidence and other issues
- Treat yourself to a spa day
- Take up a creative new hobby, such as art or music
- Dance and sing along to your favorite songs
- Watch an uplifting film
- Read a good book
- Do some volunteer work
- Call up a close friend for a chat
