The Best Supplements for a Healthy Metabolism

The human body needs calories for all actions from breathing, and thinking, to watching our favourite show while we are snacking. We get this energy using our metabolism aka the process of getting energy by breaking down food and nutrients. We are looking at The Best Supplements for a Healthy Metabolism.

In other words, metabolism is the process wherein the calories we take through food are converted into energy. Metabolism in a way directly reflects the food we consume. Especially the vitamins and minerals we eat, which are the factors that determine the efficiency of our metabolism aka our metabolic rate.

The metabolic rate of the body is the speed at which it burns calories. The faster our metabolism is, the less likely it is we’ll gain weight. As we grow older our metabolic rate goes down.  For instance, in your 40s it’s harder to lose belly fat than in your 20s. Nevertheless, some vitamins and minerals can assist in keeping the metabolism active, even during the middle age period.

There are some vitamins and minerals that can be considered major contributors that boost the effectiveness of bodily functions. One of which is metabolism, and some of those are:

B Vitamins

Vitamin B

Several B vitamins are crucial for a healthy metabolism. B-12, biotin, folate, B-6, pantothenic acid (B-5), niacin (B-3), riboflavin (B-2), and thiamine (B-1).

A deficiency in one B vitamin can affect the others, which may negatively impact metabolism.

B-12 is essential for metabolizing proteins and fats, but it needs B-6 and folate to do its job efficiently.

B-6 is also involved in protein metabolism, while thiamine helps the body process fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

It’s vital for overall health that the body can efficiently process fats, proteins, and carbs. A good metabolism ensures your body uses these nutrients for energy rather than storing them as fat.

Therefore, it’s essential to eat a diet that meets your body’s daily needs for B vitamins.

Good sources of B vitamins include lean meat and seafood, whole grains (especially brown rice), dairy products, eggs, fruits such as bananas, apples, grapes, and watermelon, nuts and seeds, vegetables like spinach, potatoes, and pumpkin.

Vitamin B-12 is only found in animal-based foods, so if you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, it’s important to take supplements containing it.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Independent studies have examined the effect of vitamin D levels on body weight in both older women and children. Both studies found that higher weight participants had lower vitamin D levels.

While it’s not entirely clear how vitamin D affects weight gain, factors like diet, blood sugar levels, and physical activity are known to play a role. Research suggests that vitamin D helps regulate blood sugar levels and reduces insulin resistance in people with diabetes.

Unlike other essential vitamins, we can obtain vitamin D from sunlight. Controlled, moderate sun exposure is one of the fastest ways to increase vitamin D levels and see the benefits of vitamin D as soon as possible.

Vitamin D-rich foods include egg yolks, fatty fish like salmon and sardines, beef liver, and certain types of mushrooms.

Many of us are deficient in vitamin D and there are many reasons for that: not enough sunlight exposure, our age, dietary insufficiency, obesity, etc. But whatever the reason might be, you can always opt for vitamin D gummies supplements. Vitamin D supplements come in many different forms so be sure to pick the one that works best for you, your goals, and your lifestyle.

Calcium

Calcium

Calcium is crucial for a healthy metabolism and blood sugar control, as well as for strong bones. A 2010 study showed that increased calcium intake, combined with vitamin D, can be a helpful ally in weight loss.

Foods rich in calcium include milk, yogurt, dark leafy greens, seeds, and almonds.

Iron

Iron

Iron is essential for growth, development, metabolism, and proper cell function. It’s also needed for hormone production and for carrying oxygen to cells and tissues through red blood cells.

Without enough iron, muscles won’t get enough oxygen, which can affect their ability to burn fat and convert it into energy efficiently.

Good sources of iron include red meat, legumes, brown rice, nuts, dark leafy greens, and tofu.

Be sure to consult with a doctor before taking iron supplements, as both too much and too little iron can be harmful.

Magnesium

Magnesium

Magnesium is another essential for the chemical reactions that produce energy in the body, meaning it’s crucial for a healthy metabolism.

Good sources of magnesium include nuts and seeds, legumes, spinach, bananas, salmon, potatoes, and whole grains.

Keep in mind, it’s best to get these essential vitamins and minerals through a well-balanced diet but if that is not an option, you can always opt for supplementation.
