I have Been Quiet
My Mother in law met someone new last year, and moved in with him permanently in January. We had not met him but he seemed nice. On Sunday, when myself and my husband was recovering from a wedding on Saturday. My Sister in Law rang and said their mum was not well, and sent through photos and a video. I thought she had a stroke.
I ended up driving to Basingstoke on Tuesday on a road trip with C to see her. She will not listen to my husband or his sister, but does let me nag her and tell her off. It did not take me long to be telling her off for not eating for two weeks. Then I saw what she was drinking and she confirmed it was diet coke and the first one in ages. I told her she was drinking it on Sunday when my sister in law was there.
About 4 years ago she had problems with her kidneys and told straight to stop drinking it, or it will kill her. So I told her this and told him to get rid of it all, which he has done. This morning she is being taken to hospital for tests as she has kidney failure. I am a mix of worry and anger.
Easter
Who is ready for the Easter Bunny to visit, can you believe it is Easter all ready. A nice long weekend to relax and have fun with family and friends. Luckily we have no plans, as next week I have my two granddaughters staying for 5 nights so will be extra shattered.

Vet’s Kitchen
You will remember that I have teamed up with Vet’s Kitchen and their Woof & Well Campaign. For those who are unsure what this is, it is a Top Dogs – National Award for Canine Companions!
Caring for a dog can benefit our mental health in so many ways. From keeping us active and boosting our confidence to helping us meet new people. Dogs don’t judge, get bored of our jokes or tire of walks along the same route. For children, the love of a canine companion can influence their world in a positive way, enabling them to grow up stronger and more resilient. This is why Vet’s Kitchen is launching the Woof & Well 2023 Award with a focus on mental wellbeing.
“Nothing beats the welcome you receive from your dog. Whether it’s a waggy tail at the end of a long working day or seeing your dog outside the school gates, their enthusiasm is contagious,” says Laura Shears MD of Vet’s Kitchen. “Humans and their canine companions have always made for a winning team. That’s why our Woof & Well Award is so important and why each year we like to showcase the wonderful stories of dogs who have provided emotional support simply by being there.”
2022 Woof & Well
Dogs like Polo from Bedford who won the 2022 Woof & Well Award after becoming a therapy dog with charity Pets As Therapy . Polo, a Labradoodle, was adopted by Gillian Thompson in 2011 when he was 20 months old. It soon became apparent that he had something very special. Both Polo and Gillian were assessed by Pets As Therapy and Polo passed his assessment as a therapy dog with flying colours and now regularly visits children in schools.
Thinking about Polo’s personality, Gillian said, “I very quickly realised that Polo had amazing qualities. He showed great empathy towards humans, particularly when they were in distress. I felt I needed to utilise these qualities. With his kind, gentle approach, he can calm and comfort children in times of distress. He reassures them and restores their confidence. The magic of Polo works time and time again and I am incredibly proud of him.”
The Vet’s Kitchen Woof and Well Award is looking for tales of everyday canine heroism from owners who want to thank their dog for helping them and their family feel better; dogs who have proven their worth as part of a family or the wider community. Dogs like Polo who are a little bit special.
All entries will be judged by the expert team at Vet’s Kitchen including Fiona Firth, the Vet’s Kitchen Nutritionist who owns two dogs Theo and Yogi. She says, “At Vet’s Kitchen we recognise that the bond between dog and owner is a powerful one and speaking from experience I wouldn’t be without my dogs. They really are wonderful companions.”

I’m so sorry to hear about your mother in law. It’s hard to watch your loved ones disobey doctor’s advice and cause themselves more damage than good. I know my father in law is a bit like that. He just heart surgery as he had a blocked valve and he has been told to improve his lifestyle and be more active but since he’s been back at home, he’s back on couch watching TV all day again, refusing to move. At first he was told to cut back on salt due to his high blood pressure but he’s still secretly consuming cured meats and salty halloumi. There is only so much we can do
They are worse than children, I told her straight and luckily is doing ok now. She has thanked me for everything I did last week and that she is lucky to have a daughter in law like me. I did go mad at her though
