Wooden Toys for Stylish Playrooms

As a parent, you know that kids love to play. Play can almost immediately translate into mess, transforming a calm room into a cacophony of brightly-coloured plastic, lights and sounds. Learning through play is important, but so is creating the feeling of a sanctuary at home. So what do you do when your child’s playroom is looking a little too cluttered? One solution is to switch to wooden toys. Wooden toys are not only stylish, but they’re also durable. Some studies suggest that having natural materials in your home can boost your wellbeing and sense of calm!

If you are looking for a way to give your child’s playroom a new look with a dash of Scandi flare. Consider switching to wooden toys. Here are just a few that we love:

Handmade Wooden Figurines

For wooden toys with a unique style and fantastic durability, why not opt for some handmade wooden figurines. These figurines, most popularly cute bunnies and bears. Come from a rich history of folk art in the German region of Erzgebirge. Where miners would practice their woodworking skills by carving small toys. After hundreds of years of wood carving, this area’s workshops, such as Müller, have become internationally known as the capital of wooden toys. Traditionally these are also handed down as heirlooms, so buying them to celebrate a special occasion could be a great way to introduce them into your playroom.

Wooden Tea Set

Get ready for an invitation to the coolest-looking tea party imaginable. With a Scandi-style wooden tea set, your little ones can enjoy preparing tea with milk and sugar to their heart’s content — but the sweetest part of this is how stylish the set looks once the playing has ended, allowing a cool and calm playroom to reign supreme.

Wooden Food

These are a sure-fire hit with little ones the world over — toy food, whether they are playing chef or supermarket, is always a winner. For an added eco and style bonus, wooden food toys are not only fun to play with but can also bring a playful edge to a playroom if stored on a shelf or in a fruit bowl.

A Classic Pull-Along

We all remember these types of toys — a caterpillar, sausage dog or duck — all able to induce giggles in children everywhere. As charming as the plastic duck may have been, in this eco-conscious world, opting for a wooden pull-along toy can make for a smarter and more stylish choice. We especially love this wooden dachshund toy

Wooden Train Set

Another classic toy that spans many generations is the train set. Opting for a wooden version of this timeless toy can offer a subtle slice of vintage style into a playroom. Depending on your child’s age, you may want to go for a simple wooden steam train, which can lead to a brilliant set-up of full tracks, such as this fully-wooden freight train set, which would arguably keep the best of us entertained for hours!

  1. My daughter used to love her wooden tea set. They are so much better than these plastic bits you get and I agree, they make the room or play room look less cluttered.

  2. We have a lot of wooden toys in our house, my 12 year old son has severe learning difficulties, he’s been home schooled throughout the covid crisis as he is immunisuppressed. Wooden toys help to develop so many life skills, communication, problem solving, maths and even developing sentence structure, they’re also washable which is always a bonus.

  3. I love the handmade wooden figurine. It really reminds me of some wooden figurines I had as a child.

  4. There is something much calming having a house scattered with wooden toys than plastic ones. We have a lot of wooden toys but sadly the kiddies always prefer the plastic electronic ones that makes sounds or lights up. But it’s not toys we are trying to move away from plastic cutlery and getting bamboo ones instead. Same with their furniture and other accessories

    1. I agree, I have some wooden toys here for the grandkids when I see them next. I tend to have a cupboard stocked so I can give them treats when I see them, or have things in to occupy them when they are here

  5. Wooden toys always look really smart and I guess they’d last so much longer than plastic ones x

  6. I do like wooden toys. There are so many options these days and they are extremely durable. We have a marble run which is great and has lasted years.
