The Cosy Things You Don’t See on Instagram

Today is 1st October, which means it is day 1 of Blogtober 2025, where I am taking part in a challenge to write a blog post every day in October. The prompt for today is The Cosy Things You Don’t See on Instagram.

This has got me think, as lets face it a lot of people look like they have the perfect life. Where I know am reality is far from that.

Some of the below are from my own experiences, the others I have asked help from friends.

What The Camera Hides

Camera

They say the camera never lies, which is true but the camera can hide things such as

  • The lukewarm cuppa you have sitting there that you took a sip out when it was hot and then got caught up and totally forgot about until you pick it up and it is stone cold
  • Your smile may look great as does your hair and make up. Below the camera view you are in your tracksuit bottoms and your slippers that are hanging in there.
  • The pile of washing in the corner waiting to be folded or ironed

The Family Home

Family at home

How many times have you scrolled through social media and see the perfect families. Along with their perfect children and perfect home. What you do not see is –

  • The washing up piled on the side that has been piled there to make a perfect clean part of the kitchen
  • The cat or dog asleep in the basket of clean washing
  • The temper tantrum the kids have just had

I do know some use services to keep their homes looking spotless, or book in for oven cleaning services. This is something I have done in the past I have to admit.

What Every Family Does

falling asleep on the sofa

How often do you scroll through your socials and think why are my family not always together and laughing – What you do not see is

  • Mum or Dad asleep on the sofa
  • The kids in the background fighting and arguing
  • The refusal to eat their food

I hope what you can see from this post is no one is that amazing. Everyone has those same moments as we all have. It is just some people like to put up the pretence.

I am always on the wave length of I am what you see. If you see me at the shops and my hair is messy and I have my comfy clothes on – so what.

If you come around my house and the housework is not up to date – so what.

I am not perfect, and neither are you but I would rather be me than someone who stresses about a speck of dust or the kids not eating every vegetable under the sun.

Remember no one has that perfect life and perfect home and family. It is just an illusion.

    1. The trouble is everyone looks at social media and see these perfect families and perfect lives, where that is far from true and it can cause others to feel inferior

  1. You’re spot on! People work so hard to create the perfect life, but what lives beyond the little IG squares is what we all have in common – the ins and outs of daily life. xx

  2. Hi! I’m so glad it’s time for Blogtober. 🙂 Yes, these are all so true- the hidden mess and sleeping on the sofa (mouth wide open snoring in my case lol). I prefer to just be myself too. Life’s too short for constant cleaning and trying to be perfect. xxx

    1. I am hopeful to complete Blogtober this year. I used to be asleep on the sofa open mouthed and snoring. Life is too short for the constant cleaning
