Smart Storage Solutions for Students

University life is a whirlwind of lectures, social events, and late-night study sessions.  Amidst the excitement, the challenge of managing your belongings in often-cramped student accommodation can quickly become overwhelming.  This little guide offers practical advice and strategies to help students maximise their storage space and maintain a clutter-free environment, even in cramped halls. It covers everything from optimising your room to taking advantage of self-storage solutions. It could also help parents advise and settle their student kids into their first year at uni.

Maximising Your In-Room Storage Space:

Student Accomodation

Whether you’re living in halls or sharing a student house. Your room might be compact and bijou, but with a strategic approach you can create a spacious and personal living area.

  • Vertical Space: Shelving units, tall bookcases, and over-the-door organisers are your allies in this battle against clutter. Utilise every inch of vertical space that you can to store clothes, books, and other essentials. Consider stackable drawers for under-bed storage or to make your built-in closet more versatile. You probably can’t drill holes in the walls, but you can use freestanding storage furnishings.
  • Multi-Functional Furniture: Invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes.  A storage ottoman offers extra seating and concealed storage. While a bed with built-in drawers maximises sleeping space and storage capacity. If you have a bed frame with space beneath, get hold of some under-bed storage containers. Pack as much as you can in them with the help of vacuum-sealed bags. Look for desks with drawers or shelving, if you’re providing your own. If the desk is already there, look for ways to maximise its surface area. Cube storage systems might help, offering mini book stands that sit in one corner of your desk.
  • Embrace the Capsule Wardrobe: A capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated collection of versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create numerous outfits.  This approach significantly reduces the amount of clothing you need to store. Freeing up valuable space and simplifying your morning routine. Try not to hang onto clothes you’re not using, because that’s hogging space you could use better.
  • Declutter Regularly: Regular decluttering is crucial for maintaining a sleek and liveable environment.  Schedule short decluttering sessions weekly or bi-weekly to prevent items from accumulating.
  • Use Labels: With lots of stuff in boxes and containers, labels are invaluable. They instantly tell you where stuff is, and show you where to put things when you’re tidying up. Nothing gets lost and you save time and frustration when your schedule is already packed and stressful.
  • Over-door Organisers. Get a few of these. You can hang them behind bathroom doors, inside wardrobe doors and on your main entrance door. Use them for toiletries, shoes, accessories, stationery, note books. Over the door or behind the door organisers are handy for all kinds of possessions that would otherwise clutter the floor or surfaces.

Maximise Space with Self-Storage

When you can’t fit all you need into one small room, consider using self storage for students. Many offer flexible, short-term contracts tailored to students’ needs, providing convenient and secure storage options.

What to look for:

  • Location and Accessibility: Choose a facility conveniently located near your university or with easy access to public transport.  Consider the facility’s opening hours and access policies to ensure they fit your schedule.
  • Security and Insurance:  Prioritise facilities with robust security. It could have 24/7 CCTV, secure access systems, and alarms.  Check if the facility offers insurance options to protect your belongings against loss or damage. Or what insurance you need to find for yourself.
  • Unit Size and Cost: Carefully assess your storage needs and select a unit size that’s appropriate for your belongings.  Good facilities will be happy to advise and show you what’s available. Some even offer special student discounts.

Since you’re going to be at uni for three or four years (maybe even more, who knows), a storage unit or locker will also give you somewhere to keep stuff during holidays or between years.

Keep Your Accommodation In Mind

Storage can be so much easier to manage when you choose your student accommodation with your belongings in mind. Before signing a contract, take a look at the available storage space and think about what you will actually need to bring with you. A room with a decent sized-wardrobe, under-bed storage or shelving can make a huge difference, particularly if you are staying in the same place throughout the whole academic year. It is also worth thinking about the space outside of just your bedroom. Shared kitchens and living areas can quickly become cluttered when several people are bringing their own belongings, so having somewhere to keep food, cooking equipment and everyday essentials can help everyone make better use of the space that’s available. If you are moving into furnished accommodation, check exactly what is provided before buying anything yourself. There isn’t much point taking up valuable floor space with items that are already included. A little bit of planning before moving day can save space, money and a lot of hassle. Once you know what kind of storage you already have available, you can decide what actually needs to come with you and leave the rest at home.

Combining Strategies for Best Results

For the most effective storage solution, combine in-room organisation techniques with self-storage.  Keep frequently used items in your room and put the ones you don’t use as often (e.g., seasonal clothing, sports equipment) in a self-storage unit. This approach gives you the best of both worlds: a clutter-free living space for leisure or work, and somewhere safe for extra things your room won’t comfortably hold.

A degree course is challenge enough, so a comfortable ‘home’ you can retreat to is a vital part of the mix. You’ll relax and sleep better, be more productive in course assignments, and generally have a more positive university experience. Good Luck!
