Meet The Blogger – Nicola

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

Hi! I’m Nicola from Mummy to Dex blog. I’m 33 and live in the North West with my husband and two sons. Dexter who is nearly 3 and Felix who we welcomed into the world in December.

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?

I started blogging in September 2016 as a way to keep my mind active while I was on maternity leave afternoon having Dex. I was part of a great community of Mums on Twitter and Facebook who encouraged me and read my posts. The blog has sort of grown from there.

HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

I think it’s definitely a lot sleeker now! Before I had no idea then about themes, photography or what a good blog post needed. I like to think that over the last three years my blog has improved drastically. In terms of content, no. I still write about the same sort of stuff.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

I think it has to be the memory that I did about 8 posts in return for a few tins of tomatoes when I first started blogging and had no idea what was going on!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

Last month was probably the most stressful. I had a huge DA drop which coincided with the Pipdig scandal. Trying to sort a new theme and work out what I could do to try and rectify my DA was stressful and I felt like jacking it all in. I’m happy to say April has been much better with a 3 point increase in DA and my second best month ever in terms of agreed work.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?

Be prepared to work on your blog at every opportunity. The work you need to do on a blog to keep page views ticking over and keep your content fresh is never ending. There’s always something that you can be working on or improving. As a new blogger you need to be prepared for that, it’s not a case of getting free stuff for nothing.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?

I didn’t realise you could make money from blogging and had no idea that people did it as a full time job. I was quite happy plodding along writing posts that only a few people read but when that first email popped into my inbox offering me a product- I was hooked!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Spare time? As a mum and blogger I don’t think I have any of that! If I’m not cleaning, spending time with my children or working full time, I’m doing SOMETHING that involves the blog, whether that’s scrolling Instagram, scheduling tweets or writing a fresh piece of content.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?

Get my family on a plane to somewhere hot and sunny!

WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?

My blogging hero is my mate Devon Mama who started blogging around the same time as me. She’s been boss at blogging from the start and has taught me so much about how I want my blog to look and how to achieve it. She’s always there for me when I’m stressed out with one thing or another and is super patient too. She has a lovely blog which you must check out!

  1. The Pigdig issue affected a lot of bloggers. I didn’t realise how many were using them. Glad your DA went up 3points Nicola. Mine dropped and I’m still trying to build it up.

  2. I wish I was told that you with a blog, you literally have to be on the move to get the page views ticking: always learning. But I’m glad I’ve been learning a lot too. Anyway, I feel like I want to win a lottery too and visit Morocco too!

    1. Blogging is constant hardwork which a lot of people do not understand, there is so much more that goes on past writing and publishing a post x

  3. I can relate to her funny experience of receiving cans of tomatoes in exchange for a blog post. For me, it was 30 tablets of non-acidic Vitamin C, which was not even sent to my home address. I had to pick it up from an office kilometers away from home. Never did. Such a waste of time. Thanks for introducing Nicola to me. I will check out her blog and social media accounts too.

    1. I think we all have had experiences similar, but it is the excitement of your first offer and knowing your blog is doing ok.

  4. Blogging is a full-time job for everyone doing it but you just have to keep plugging at it and churning out fresh and fun content.

    1. Blogging is a full time job, and so much more goes on behind the scenes than people think, but fresh and fun content is key

  5. Blogging is like an outlet of a river of thoughts and ideas. If you have a love of writing and reading, blogging can be great. There are so much going on with it behind the scene.

    1. This is very true and blogging is like an outlet of your thoughts and ideas. I love blogging for so many reasons but there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes

    1. I know, but when starting out the excitement of someone offering you a tin of tomatoes is a big thing lol we have all been there and done it x

  6. Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. Blogging is such effort! I love it but am looking forward to the day when I can feel like I finally have some traction 🙂
