Following on from my Christmas Dinner Table post on how to prepare for the favourite meal of the year. I am now looking at decorating your home for Christmas. Which is another thing on your to do list that is never ending.

Set a Theme
The first thing to do is set a theme of the colour scheme you want. There are many themes to choose from including –
- Classic Christmas: Red, green, and gold decorations with traditional elements like stockings, garlands, and Santa figurines.
- Winter Wonderland: White, silver, and blue tones, with snowflakes, frosted ornaments, and lots of sparkle.
- Rustic Charm: Natural materials like wood, burlap, and greenery paired with warm lighting.
- Modern Glam: Metallics like gold and rose gold, geometric ornaments, and sleek designs.
Living Room
The next area to think about is your living room. This is the main room in the house so you want to make sure it is festive and looks great.
The main centre piece of the living room is the Christmas tree. Now is the time to check your old tree over to make sure it is still ok from last year. Maybe you opt for real Christmas trees. However, Christmas trees have changed a lot over the years and you can get artificial trees that look just like the real once. With the added bonus of not shedding its pine everywhere.
I knew our Christmas tree was getting old, so when I was offered a tree to review it made perfect sense to update ours. I was sent a Pre-Lit Norway Spruce Potted Christmas Tree, that is 5ft. The tree is very easy to assemble which is great that you do not have to mess around too much with getting the branches looking perfect. The selling point for me is that it is pre-lit and very easy to assemble.
Other areas to look at before you start decorating are –
- Christmas Tree: Check your tree decorations – make sure they are not broken or they match your chosen theme for Christmas 2024
- Mantelpiece: Drape garlands over the mantel and add candles, stockings, and seasonal figurines.
- Throw Pillows & Blankets: Swap out regular ones for festive designs like plaid patterns, snowflakes, or quotes like “Merry Christmas.”
- Ambient Lighting: Use fairy lights, LED candles, or a fireplace for a cosy glow.
Front Porch
Whether you want to keep it understated or go over the top with your decorations. Your porch or front door often gets left out of the decorations. You can add –
- Wreath: Hang a festive wreath on the door—natural, pre-lit, or decorated with ornaments.
- Lighting: Add string lights around the door frame or along your porch railings.
- Seasonal Touches: Use planters with small evergreen trees, poinsettias, or lanterns filled with ornaments or fairy lights.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms can also have a festive vibe to them. Kids especially love the Christmas themed bedroom
- Add a festive throw blanket and cushions to the bed.
- Have festive duvet sets
- Christmas Pyjamas
- Use a small tabletop tree or fairy lights around the headboard.
Outdoor Decorations
If you decorate your outdoors, check your decorations are working or are not too shabby. There are may ways you can decorate your garden.
- String lights on trees, bushes, or along the roofline.
- Set up lawn decorations like reindeer, inflatable snowmen, or nativity scenes.
- Illuminate pathways with lanterns
Finishing Touches
Lastly, do not forget the little finishing touches
- Christmas Scents: Use candles, diffusers, or pot-pourri with scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla.
- Music: Play Christmas music to complement your decorations.
- DIY Touches: Incorporate homemade ornaments or garlands for a personal touch. Those with families can add their children’s homemade ornaments and decorations.

We did White Christmas last year and I’m excited for this year’s theme. I’m already bringing out most of our Christmas stuff and discussing what theme we would do this year. Kids always look forward on helping to decorate.
C has always loved helping decorating at Chrismtas and even now still gets involved

I love to get a real tree as I love the smell so much. I tend to go for a rustic look with plenty of fairy lights! We don’t tend to decorate the bedrooms. I also love a scented candle and had an amazing Christmas trees scented one last year.
Bedrooms are a personal thing some do and some don’t. My daugther loves Christmas bedding etc. I have never had a real tree so do love the artificial trees that are more realistic
I love decorating the inside of the house but tend not to put anything outside
We used to put lights up outside when the kids were younger, but just concentrate on inside now

I like going to see my friends and family during the Holiday Season. Many do like to go with a certain theme each year. And I am always surprised what I will see this year. It is a very cool time for creativity and togetherness.

I do love a theme just deciding what theme we are going for this year
I’ve always been a big fan of the rustic Christmas look. It feels so old-school and extra magical to me.
I am torn I do love the rustic look but do also love the more modern look
Although I don’t do much in the way of decorating these days, I love to see door wreaths, Christmas lights and trees in other people’s houses as I’m out walking. It’s wonderful, especially for children, and makes for happy memories as they grow up.
I am the same, we do have the tree, and we do need a new wreath for our door as ours broke last year
Our yearly theme is tacky. LOL. We don’t do themed rooms or things like that. We just put out the most colorful gaudy stuff. It’s a game for us. Like the house is wearing its own ugly Christmas sweater.

My Christmas decorations don’t really have a theme. There are a couple that I have had as a child, a collection of rather tacky ones that my children chose when they were little, and numerous creations that they made each Christmas at school nursery or school.
