What To Look For When Buying A New Sofa

I mentioned in my weekly round up post last week, about how I finally admitted to my husband that I did not like our new sofa we purchased in January. Which is why I am sharing with you on what to look for when buying a new sofa. To avoid making a costly mistake.

What not to do

We needed a new sofa, and after looking for ages, and my husband finally talking me around to a Chesterfield style sofa. We ordered one online. We chose this one as I loved the colour, that is honestly what sold it to me. We had not tried it out, as it was a company online.

When it arrived, and was in place it looked great, but it was the most uncomfortable sofa I have ever owned. Honestly, I would either end up on the floor or would not spend time in our lounge. My husband finally twigged why I was spending less time in their. When I finally had to admit why.

So a huge lesson learnt, do not buy without trying first.

We had started looking again, and agreed we would not make the mistake of buying again, without trying first. I was wanting another corner sofa, which we had previously. We both agreed and fell in love with the Sienna corner sofa.

It fits perfectly in our lounge and is so comfortable. My husband has this end. Which has a phone charging point and is an electric recliner as well. I am in the corner and love it. I also know that we will not be changing our sofa now for a very long time.

Oak Furnitureland have some great deals at the moment, if you are looking for new furniture. I do have my eye on a few more items. Also their customer care and updates on delivery are great.

What we learnt

No matter how much you want something new. Always try before you buy and not just a quick sit down yes that is ok. This is a main item in your home, and it makes a huge difference to your daily living. I am so happy we were able to get a new one, and able to sit and use our lounge again.

Have you ever made any big spending disasters?

  1. We just purchased a new sofa and made sure it had a warentee on it, as sofas are such a big expense! I got a velvet blue one, similar to the first picture in this post actually.

  2. This is such a handy post. I have bought sofas without trying them first too and it’s a nightmare – such a costly mistake to make. I’m glad you’ve found a new sofa and that you’re all happy with it.

  3. Thanks for these top tips. So handy to know for the future. We looked on facebook market place and someone said they’d also be able to deliver what was posted as a relatively new sofa. It looked lovely! Lovely friendly man delivered it and as it was a corner sofa he even helped fix the 3 bits together. BUT when I sat on it I felt like I was sitting on the floor! It was so low down. Looked lovely, great quality. But I hated it! Couldn’t agree more about trying before you buy.

  4. Such a good tip! I do agree it is best to see it in person and sit on it to see if you feel comfy before purchasing a new sofa

  5. We have been through 3 sofas and are now on the hunt for a new one but my husband is super fussy so it feels like we are looking for a unicorn.

  6. These are great tips for sure and my husband and I are looking for a new set! I am bookmarking to come back to 😉

  9. Yes, sofas are a bit like mattresses: you really need to try them first. Ours is a multi-pet household so the easy cleaning fabric is something that needs to be considered too.

    1. I agree they are like finding your mattress as well, we have two dogs and both have thought they could get on my new sofa. Both got told no, I do need to get some throws to hep keep them clean. Especially with the grandkids coming to stay

  10. Thankfully no huge disaster like this but we did spend quite a while trying out sofas before we bought the one we did, as you said it’s a big decision to make x

  11. These are very useful tips. I bought a new couch a couple of years ago when I moved into a new place and made sure to go to the shop and try them before I picked the one I liked. For me, it had to be comfortable as a couch but also as a bed, in case I have friends staying over.

  12. I made a mistake like that before but with an armchair. I’ve learnt over the years that it is sometimes best to buy furniture after you seen it and tested it out. But I like the electric recliner feature. I can see myself dosing off on that in the evening whilst my husband will use it to play games on his phone whilst keeping it charged.

    1. It is overrwhelming, but we are so happy with our final choice now, my advise take time and keep going until you find the one you are happy with

  13. The Sienna corner sofa is lovely. It looks super stylish and very spacious. There seems to be plenty of room to fit the family there.

    1. It is lovely it looks great, and the covering is so soft and neutral that it fits with our colour scheme and my cushions. Plenty of room for us to sit comfortably even when the grandkids visit

  14. I look for comfort above all. I don’t need high style, I need something that feels good. If I can get both, though, that’s the best.

  15. We currently have a sofa bed and it is so uncomfortable. If we had a space I would love a big comfy corner sofa is a plush green velvet. Buying a sofa is a big expense

  16. Useful tips thank you! We are looking to replace our sofa this year so will definitely take all your advice on board. I think it’s really important to actually sit on a sofa before you order to make sure it’s comfortable and to your liking.

  17. Oh my gosh, a comfortable couch is so important! We have a sectional that we’ve had for 7 years now and still love it. When we were purchasing, we also had to measure the living room to make sure it would fit well in the space, then went to local furniture stores and the whole family tried them out before we made our choice.

    1. I think we had lost the will to live finding a new one, and we both just said that one. I really wish one of us had been stronger. But we do love our new one

  18. I would always try a sofa first. I am quite short but I like my legs to touch the floor. I also like a high back but it has to feel comfortable

    1. We always have before, I think we were so worn down but neither of us agreeing and went for it. Am so grateful to our new one and we both love it
