Day 13 of Blogtober 2022 is talking about winter comfort foods. One thing I love about winter is all the comfort foods we can eat. Plus we can hide what we wear under comfortable baggy jumpers and leggings, a total win.
You will have seen a lot of my winter comfort foods in the past. As for me, I love recipes that are also quick and easy. If there is a cheat in the process of making it. I will find it.
Table of Contents
ToggleOne of my favourite meals is cottage pie. Now C is on her Mediterranean diet, sheAMP doesn’t want this. I made this recently and then froze half of the mix down. I just defrosted and then added the mashed potato to the top and cooked. You can find my easy cottage pie recipe hereAMP.
Tip – If you love mashed potato but hate the lumps or find it a chore, get yourself a masha. I have had one for a few years and it is a total game changer.
I do not like liver, even the thought of touching makes me squirm. I use tongs so I can avoid that part. I do however love the rich gravy it makes. You can find my quick and easy recipe hereAMP. For those who are not keen on liver, but has someone in the family who loves it. You will see from my recipe how I adapt this so we can all enjoy the meal, but only cooking one dish.
Whether you have it for a filling lunch, or for dinner. There is something comforting about homemade soup. C loves my chicken soup when she is feeling ill, you can find the recipe hereAMP. If I am making big batches to freeze down, I will make it on the hob. Then blitz down with my trusty hand blender I used to use to make C’s baby food.
If I am just making small batches for lunch I will use my soup maker. Some of my favourite soups I have made are –
I also use my slow cooker a lot more in the winter. I love to put it on in the morning and then the smell of it cooking always makes me feel warm and comfortable.
When making roast beef, I get a slow cooking piece and add to my slow cooker with garlic, onions, seasoning and beef stock and just let it do its thing. I then thicken the gravy and freeze down the beef and gravy for other days.
I want to start using my slow cooker a lot more this year.
What are your winter comfort foods?
Soup, soup and more soup! It’s so easy and inexpensive to make and doesn’t get boring if it is served with tasty toppings and sides.
I also love a plate of freshly steamed vegetables with a handful of seeds and olive oil poured over. However, I’m trying to wean myself off olive oil due to the high prices in the supermarket.
I do love homemade soups and am loving starting to make them again now
Feel. Like winter has sprung again here – do love my homemade soups any time of year
I know what you mean it really is not nice out there at the moment
I swear by my slow cooker during Autumn in particular. It is such a time saver and the dishes taste absolutely delicious. x
I need to use mine more as only do a few meals in mine
I’ve always been a comfort food kind of girl. No matter what season it is, I do love my soups, casseroles and stews. But it’s just so nice eating it without sweating bucket loads and enjoy the warmth it creates from within
I tend to not have these when tthe weather is hot, I tend to go for lighter meals as the heat makes me want to eat less
Wow, the cottage pie looks divine, still some things in UK I yet haven’t tried. That soup also looks delicious! I definitely love autumn and winter because of the comfy clothes, and you have an excuse to stay inside! hehe x
I agree warm and comfy clothes are my favourite thing as well, the cottage pie is a huge favourite
I love cottage pie, it is such a hot and filling meal. I always bulk meals like this out with vegetables too. It gets a bit of healthy food into my teen that way. I think we will be using our slow cooker more this winter, because of the Cost of living. But i need to be more adventurous with it.
I need to be more adventurous with mine as well, maybe we can inspire each other x

I love comfort foods too. I love liver and bacon but unfortunately no-one else likes it. I use my slow cooker as much as possible, one of the last things I cooked in there was a ham joint. Another family favourite is cawl, a Welsh dish made with lamb and veg.my husband makes this, it’s his signature dish!
Only my husband likes liver but I do love the gravy and adapt so we all get somethiing we like. Not tried crawl will have to look that up

I am not a fan of liver either and I don’t think my girls have ever had it. My fella does love it so I might have to try your recipe. x

We really need to use our slow cooker more as we don’t use it as much as I’d like. My fiance wants us to get a better one, but I’ve said we need to use the one we have now more before spending the money x
I have had mine for about 20 years now I won it in a raffle at work and it is still going strong
Slow cookers are a staple! Thanks for sharing these recipes.
