Raising an Environmentally Aware Child
7 January 2022

In today’s world, issues relating to the environment are a growing concern that children. As well as adults, must become aware of.  Starting to teach children how to be environmentally aware at an early age will help them to grow. Into adults who are not only kind to our planet but who understand the economic and sustainable benefits of this. So, how can you help children to become more environmentally aware? Here we talk about Raising an Environmentally Aware Child.

The outdoor life

Taking children for walks in local forests or around nearby parks. Allows them to get out of the house and engage with nature and all the biodiversity it has to offer. Climate change will cause all aspects of nature to change over time. So it is important that children can see for themselvesAMP how we as humans can impact the environment if we fail to take care of it.

Take the scientific approach

Museums always have exhibitions or themes that feature nature and aspects of our planet. At their core and visiting these is a fantastic way for children to learn about climate change. Plus its impact on the planet using child-friendly language and in a more visual and tactile way. Many will also offer workshops or talks to engage more effectively with children. As well as suggest projects that they can start or get involved in.

Teach great habits in the home

Teaching your children to adopt eco-friendly behaviour around the home will really have an impact. Both on their habits and their understanding of how they can help protect the environment. You could, for instance, turn the process of recycling into a game by having three different coloured bins. Ask the children to decide which items go into which bin and why. Another great habit to encourage to avoid food waste is to ensure that children eat as much as they can from their plate of food. While also learning yourself how much each child tends to eat. So you don’t either make too much or overload their plates. Both of which will result in unnecessary food waste. Don’t forget though that some surplus food can be stored in containers in the fridge. To use again either later or the following day.

Turning the tide on water use

At a very early age, it is important that children are taught to turn the tap off when they have finished whatever they are doing. Whether that’s brushing their teeth, washing their hands or filling a glass. To help to cut back on water use, turn your taps into low-flow versions. Simply unscrewing the existing aerator and then wrapping some pipe tape around the new replacement aerator before screwing it back on the tap. How easy is that!

Creature comfort

Sadly, animals all over the world are being affected by pollution as well as the impact of climate change. To help your child to becomeAMP more eco-aware, make sure they get to see animals in their own environment. Perhaps at the local park, and also think about whether allowing them to have a pet of their own is practical. So they understand what animals need to survive and thrive. It could be a goldfish, a budgie, a hamster or, if you have the time and space, perhaps even a cat or dog.

However, you integrate animals and all living things into your children’s lives. Make sure they understand how important it is that these creatures live in a clean environment, free from harmful pollution. Offer some examples such as why dumping waste into rivers and lakes will harm the fish and other creatures living in the water. This will help children to grow into responsible adults who understand why they need to take care of the environment around them.

Being outdoors

Many of the ideas we have suggested to help your children become more environmentally aware. Involve being outdoors so obviously it makes sense that they are dressed appropriately. What could be more practical for children than kids dungarees that have been made in a sustainable way.

It is important, I always say children learn from home

I love to take my daughter out in the fresh sea air as much as possible, we live right near the coast so we are lucky but we also love to visit parks and spy on the squirrels and collect leaves etc to make pictures with or collect shells from the beaches. My daughter is very aware of the planet and how to recycle.

It is great getting outside into nature and by doing this children do learn about the planet and how our actions can cause damage. Even by just keeping hold of your rubbish until you find a bin or get home

I never thought my child would feel so much concern for the environment as he always seemed carefree. Yet he’s proven me wrong. It’s amazing how kids have an inate sense of moral responsibility.

I think for our children it is just natural to them, where we think they do not understand it is just the way they live, it is our generation that need the educating

A really important issue. My lad has severe learning difficulties, he has already grasped the concept of recycling and knows mostly what goes in what kitchen bin. My older 2 are very aware, I’ve ran our local Freecycle group for about 15 years, so it’s something close to my own heart. It’s an important message for the next generation, we have to protect our planet if we hope for it to keep us alive for future generations.

Some great tips there especially on water use.

It’s so important that youngsters know about these things, although most youngster I know are more knowledgeable than I am about it all

I think it’s a great idea to start teaching your child on this subject x some great ideas here

I agree – I think this is so important and one that will only become more important with time. We try to role model being environmentally friendly and encouraging our children to help with the recycling, turning lights off etc.

I think our childrens generation and the generations that follow will just do these things without thinking, it is our generation that have had to learn to do all of this and make it a daily thing

I tried so hard with my child when he was younger to make him care for the environment and enjoy the great outdoors but now he’s an adult he rarely goes out and buys a carrier bag every time he goes to the supermarket! I think the message is to keep trying no matter how old they get!

Reply

That is kkds for you, I think some things sink in and they do naturally, other things they do forget. I have had to buy carrier bags at times as forget to take mine with me, but I do reuse them

Reply

It is so important to pass the message on, but I think our kids are smarter than us when it comes to the environment

Reply

I agree, also for the younger ones they are growing up aware of it so will be just normal for them
