How To Use Homemade Cleaning Products

I am looking at how to use homemade cleaning products. Homemade cleaning products can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to commercial cleaning products, which often contain harsh chemicals. Making your own cleaning solutions allows you to control the ingredients and avoid using harmful substances. I am sharing some easy recipes and how to make cleaning less of a chore.

I was recently asked to review a couple of products from the Dishmatic range. Which I am putting to use with my homemade cleaning products.AMP

• Dishmatic Tear n’ Wipe Microfibre Cloths – Perfect for use all around the house. Wiping down cabinets, surfaces, windows, baths and spills. Simply tear off a cloth, use and then they can be placed in the washing machine to be reused again and again.
• Dishmatic Wonder Stars – the ultimate dream team for any cleaning task. The non-scratch scourer is created from Flexi-Fibre, making it soft in warm water and firm in cold water, perfect for all your washing up needs and around the house.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Ingredients:

• 1 cup distilled white vinegar
• 1 cup water
• Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oil (e.g., lemon, tea tree, lavender) for a pleasant scent

Mix the vinegar and water in a spray bottle. If desired, add a few drops of essential oil for a fresh fragrance. Use this mixture on countertops, sinks, glass surfaces, and other non-porous surfaces.

Glass Cleaner

Ingredients

• 1 cup distilled water
• 1 cup white vinegar
• 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well before use. Spray on glass surfaces and wipe with a lint-free cloth or newspaper for streak-free shine.

Floor Cleaner

Ingredients:

• 1 gallon warm water
• 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
• 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
• Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oil (e.g., lemon, pine) for a pleasant scent

Mix all the ingredients in a bucket and use the solution to mop your floors. The vinegar helps to remove dirt and grime, and the rubbing alcohol aids in quick drying.

Baking Soda Scrub

Ingredients:

• Baking soda
• Water

Make a paste by mixing baking soda with enough water to create a spreadable consistency. This can be used as a scrub for sinks, tubs, tile grout, and other stubborn stains. Apply the paste, scrub gently, and then rinse thoroughly.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Ingredients:

• 1 cup baking soda
• 1 cup distilled white vinegar

Sprinkle the baking soda into the toilet bowl, and then pour the vinegar on top. Allow it to fizz and sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a toilet brush and flushing.

A Few Things To Remember

Remember to label your homemade cleaning products appropriately and store them safely, out of reach of children or pets. Always test a small, inconspicuous area before using any homemade cleaner on a surface to ensure compatibility.

While homemade cleaning products can be effective, they might not have the same level of disinfecting power as commercial products. If disinfection is a priority, you can consider using hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol as disinfectants in your homemade cleaning solutions. However, for specific health and safety concerns, always consult with a professional or do thorough research on the ingredients you plan to use.

I got rid of all store bought cleaning chemicals years ago. We now have a mix of orange peels soaked in vinegar for basic cleaning. And there is always bicarb and citric soda in the house for when we need it.

It is so much nicer using your own cleaning products, wish I had done it a long time ago

Bicarb of soda is a god send in removing odours, I also love a lemon/lime cut in half in the fridge to soak up any bad smells

I do love using lemons for helping with odours

I’m awful but I really don’t like the smell of vinegar. I guess I should invest in some essential oils but would that work on glass?

I hope one day cleaning products can come in powder form so you can dilute it yourself to cut out the plastic part. Doesn’t make sense to me that we’re buying 90% water

I agree, I do love natural products though

I will give the All-Purpose Cleaner recipe a go as I am worried about the number of different chemicals I currently use.
