Remaining Body-Positive During Negative Times

It’s no secret that both men and women struggle with body image issues and insecurities. It makes sense as to why. People are bombarded with advertisements and influences that tell them their bodies aren’t good enough. However, in recent years, the body positive movement has risen to prominence. Giving both men and women the opportunity to forgo negative body talk and embrace themselves as is. While studies show that women appear to be more dissatisfied with their bodies than men, the body positive movement has given women more confidence in recent years.

But what happens when times get tough and the body-positive mindset wanes? Even in a perfect world, a body-positive mindset isn’t easy to cultivate and keep. Naturally, negative self-talk can seep in and tank a person’s confidence. Pair the everyday messages and influences that tell people they aren’t good enough with a tragedy or set back, and a negative mindset can soon become the norm.

Whether you have somewhere to be or you’ve got no plans, get dressed in your favorite outfit. My body is remarkable.” Then, take these positive affirmations and place them on sticky notes that you put around your house or on your mirror. Limit Your Media Consumption

Whether it’s your favorite TV show, a magazine or the news, the mass media plays a big role in the mindset of most people. It can influence the thoughts you have and, more importantly, how you feel about yourself. It can be difficult to remain body positive when you don’t see yourself reflected in your favorite forms of media and you are constantly inundated with negative news while scrolling through endless photoshopped photos. Mute the constant noise by limiting your exposure to social media and news. Whether that means you allow yourself only a couple of hours or minutes on social media. Or you vow to abstain from watching the news three days a week, you’ll notice a shift in your mindset.

Craft a Girl Gang or Friend Group Just Like You

Take a look around your friend group or favorite virtual social media tribe. Do any of these girls look like you or have the same body type? Because women are naturally wired to compete with other women, surrounding yourself with a group of girls who don’t share your same struggles or body type may cause you to constantly compare yourself to others, which can easily tank confidence and make you resort to negative body talk. Whether in person or digitally, create a girl squad that reflects your own self. If you are having a hard time associating with a new friend group, start following more women who look like you on social media. This way, when you do consume media, you are constantly seeing yourself. This will help you normalize and appreciate your figure more often, which is what body positivity is all about!

Shift From Negativity to Gratitude
