My To Do List For January

After the Christmas and New Year celebrations have finished, and we head back to normal life.  January can seem pretty bleak, as we look forward to the Spring and the weather getting warmer. Every January I create a to do list, which includes a list of things I need or want to.

  • Update my new year diary of important dates
  • Check on when my various insurance policies end
  • Look at finances
  • Declutter the house

Like for most of us, the new year is a time we make changes, some we will continue with, and others just got forgotten.  The two most important areas for me are

Updating my diary

updating diary

I do use the calendar on my phone for quick glances, but my bible is my old fashioned filofax.  It literally has my life in it.  I have to be on top of important dates such as birthdays and anniversaries.  But also hospital appointments for my daughter.  Dates when my parents are away so we do not clash.  It also is where I keep hospital letters which are sometimes needed at appointments and addresses I need.

I also have notes on when insurance policies are due to end and need renewing.

Check Insurance

insurance

Our home insurance ends in January, so it is always a time that highlights the need to check on our home insurance and not just take the renewal quote.  You also need to look at the types of insurance that is available to you. Whether you want just contents or just buildings or a combined contents and insurance policy.  You also need to look at

  • Re-building costs
  • Flooding
  • New for old
  • itemised items that you want to have insured for a certain value
  • Freezer damage
  • Subsidence
  • Alternative accommodation
  • How much you want to pay per claim

There is so much to consider when taking out a new policy, it takes time and it is always advisable to check reviews as well.

Whilst looking at our buildings insurance I check to see if there are any other insurances available that we have not yet considered.

  • Car Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Travel Insurance
  • Health Insurance
  • Multi Cover Insurance
  • Pet Insurance

We do have most of these and recently changed our car insurance to a multi policy insurance as it worked out cheaper, when we got a new car. Plus the insurance company we were with and had been with for 3 years with no claims, wanted to charge an unreal amount for insuring.  We looked around and got a multi car policy for a much lower premium.

I always look at our pet insurance each year, having two dogs it is always advisable to have pet insurance, but also look at what is covered.  As some do not cover for long term illnesses for example which could turn out to be very expensive as they get older.

What do you do when your current insurance policies are due to end? Do you accept the renewal as it is just too much effort or time to look around? Or do you look around?

I would always recommend going with a trusted provider and looking at reviews from those who have been in an unfortunate position they have had to make a claim.  I always moan about paying for insurance, but it also means I have peace of mind if I do ever have to claim.

You are so good and being so organised! I am lucky that my other half looks after all the insurance stuff apart from the pet insurance. I am mainly just trying to get my brain back in gear…by then it will probably be February!

It’s good to have a to do list. Sounds like you have plenty to help get you through January alongside the two dogs. Pet insurance is really important to look at when you have dogs.

It is great to have a to do list of the important things, and insurance is one of those things we all hate to pay for but know we must have it

I have the same on my phone calendar and in my diary so no forgetting, it really does pay to take a bit of time in looking at renewal quotes and getting comparisons

I think January is a good time to declutter and sort out our finances, set goals for the year-ahead, etc! I’ve been doing the same lately.

I’m like you, I like my phone calendar but you can’t beat pen and paper for staying on track!! I admit I let hubby sort out all the insurance, major headache and as long as we’re insured then I’m good!

I always think using pen and paper gives you a back up, my husband used to deal with everything, then when I took redundancy when C was a baby and my husband was setting up the business and working hard I took it over, although he tends to deal with the car insurance

Wow, you get a lot done in January. I have not really thought about home insurance – there are so many different insurances out there.

Going through our attic is on my list! We chucked a load of boxes up there when we moved house and it’s time to see what’s in them!
