Meet The Blogger - Or Goren

Following on in my Meet The Blogger series, today I am introducing you to Or Goren who blogs over at Cord Busters and Savvy Londoner.

or goren 1024 - Or Goren

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

My name is Or Goren and I run two blogs – Cord Busters (for TV cord cutters) and Savvy Londoner (a more general-purpose money blog)

WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?

I always loved writing (I wrote and printed my own ‘Class Newsletter’ when I was 10-years-old…), so it was just a matter of finding a topic that would motivate me to start something by myself, without a boss to do it for. And since I’ve always been keen on helping friends and family save money – it was only natural to start blogging about these topics as well.

HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

The more you write, the more your writing will improve. So I sometimes cringe when I re-read posts that I wrote three years ago, but then I see it as a good thing, realising how my writing has improved over the years. (And I’m sure I’ll say the same thing three years from now…)

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?

My “Cord Busters” site is about TV cord cutting, which means ditching the traditional cable/satellite TV companies for cheaper alternatives like Netflix. Granted, some people are not very familiar with the concept – but someone sent me an e-mail thinking that my site is about wireless (as in – no cords) phones.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
About a month ago Google had an infamous “De-Indexing Bug” that affected a lot of websites around the world. My traffic went down by about 70% overnight, and income from the blog crashed by about 90%. And it went on like that for a whole week, until things started going back to normal – I thought I would go crazy. That’s why it’s so important now to rely on just one traffic source for your blog – but sometimes that’s easier said than done.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?

Focus on writing – write, write and write some more. Later, you can spend more time on promoting the website. monetising it, and all that – but there’s no point in doing all the rest of the stuff, if you don’t have enough good content.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?

The fact that there are so many ups and downs. You can do brilliantly well one week, and feel on top of the world – and then something bad happens (often out of your control), and you think your blog is going down the drain. But you have to stick with it – that’s just part of the business.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

As someone who writes a lot about TV and tech – I obviously love watching TV, as well as play around with gadgets. But despite all that, I also love going out just to have a walk in the park – it’s amazing how a short stroll like that can give me energy for the rest of the day.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?

I would probably put at least some of the money away in some sort of a savings account right away, so I won’t be tempted to use it all up too quickly.

WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?

That’s hard to say because I read a lot of blogs from all over the world. But I’ll name Andy Webb – not just because of his excellent blog, but also because he founded the incredible “UK Money Bloggers” group, which helps and encourages me constantly.

His blog Cord Busters sounds like an interesting site. I will have to check that out today. It is nice to learn about his blogging journey. I mean, we all go through similar experiences too, right?

This was an interesting interview. As a newbie in blogging, I think the message that stood out for me was the one where he says to write, write amd write. That is very true

I am glad ou enjoyed the interview and writing is the key x

I cut m cable here in New York City over 3 years ago and frankly, I should’ve done it sooner lol. Seeing how we stream everything and can watch on the go, it’s extremely cost-saving.

  • This is a nice interview with a blogger. As a blogger it’s nice to hear that others have the same troubles and concerns as I do. And I agree with him, people should focus on writing–cus it’s all about that.

Interesting post. He was right about blogging having ups and downs. One week, you’re fine; the next could end up being not so great. It does have its ups and downs.

This is a good read! I totally agree with him. Bloggers should not rely on one traffic source only. It’s the reason why I also maintain my social media accounts.
