Following on in my Meet The Blogger series, today I am introducing you to Andy who blogs over at Workshopshed.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?
The blog started as a journal to keep track of my projects and thoughts.
HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?
The blog still includes my projects and thoughts but also includes interviews with makers, product reviews, visits/events and tutorials. The projects have gone from some simple tools to more complex project using electronics, mechanics and software.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
After watching Mr Topsy Turvy with my daughter, I wonder if it would be possible to make his clock. The responses to my Topsy Turvy clock project have been great. Some people are completely unphased by a clock with the numbers in the “wrong” place but others it’s a complete headscratcher, particularly when the hands go backwards from 2:59 to 3 O’ clock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sVEQQevJvM
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE STARTING YOUR BLOG?
A year ago I had a lot of trouble with hackers and spammers. They did not do any damage but ended up using up all my bandwidth quota so the site would go offline for days. I’ve had some upgrades since then but it was a painful period.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?
Don’t try to do everthing at once. Focus on the writing and producing content, with steady improvements to things like theme and automation.
WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE BEFORE YOU STARTED?
I never realised it would produce so many new opportunities such as travel, speaking events, magazine articles and meeting people.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Making and repairing is what I do in my spare time. I’ve made furniture, boxes, an enchanted weather house, the topsy turvy clock of course, a dragon detecting knight , a flea chariots and a whole range of smaller projects.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?
Tick the box marked “no publicity”. After that I’d set something up to provide a regular income so that I did not have to worry month to month. For the blog I’d hire a PR manager to hook me up with people who had fantastic projects I could get involved with.
WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?
It has to be the Bob Claggett. He’s an American Maker and I’ve seen him grow his YouTube channel to a full on maker business with a team to help.
