How to Unwind as a Parent

Being a parent is one of the most rewarding yet challenging jobs in the world, but there are moments when you simply want to get away from it all and have a little bit of ‘me time’.

Many parents underestimate the importance of self-care and keep going until they reach burn-out. Staying calm and collected through the busiest and most stressful situations is never easy and is sure to test even the most laid-back of characters.

Being responsible for everything from your child’s safety to their education and wellbeing, it’s important to take a step back from time and simply unwind and regain your sense of identity and composure.

If you struggle to unwind as a parent, the three tips below should give you some direction as to how to get into a calmer mindset and unwind from time to time.

1. Exercise

Research has proven that not only does exercise help keep your body in good shape and promote physical health and wellbeing, but it is also just as important for our mental health. Once you get the heart pumping, it releases ‘feel good’ chemicals in the brain such as the likes of serotonin and dopamine, which have been discovered by scientists to reduce stress levels. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore – choose an activity you enjoy and make it a fun past-time when you have a spare evening without the kids. You could join the gym, enrol onto dance classes or even go for a cycle.

2. Enjoy a pamper session

When was the last time you treated yourself? If it has been months or even years since you visited a salon, it’s certainly about time you did. This type of self-care is necessary when you have so many responsibilities on your plate that you forget what’s most important – your needs. Booking an appointment with the best hairdressers in Guildford to transform your appearance; having your nails done; or even a facial has been proven to trigger the relaxation response, which goes on to prevent high stress levels damaging your mental and physical health.

3. Have a weekend away

weekend away

You may never take the opportunity to have a much-needed weekend break with your partner to rejuvenate and recharge your batteries. The hectic schedule of everyday life can be tiring, to the point where you need to completely switch off. If you have a family member close by who is willing to babysit the kids – take the opportunity. You don’t know what you’re missing until you arrive and realise you are finally free of any responsibility.

As a final note, there is a key reason as to why the cabin crew advises you to put on your oxygen mask before your child, and this sentiment also applies to everyday life. You need to take care of yourself before you are able to take care of others. When you feel you’re becoming overwhelmed, understand that this is your body’s way of saying ‘enough is enough’ and make the decision to take some time out for yourself.
