It is Day 7 of Blogtober 2018, as you may be aware is a challenge where we post every day in October, following a daily prompt. Today we are talking about Dyspraxia Awareness Week.
What is Dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia is a neurological disorder that impacts on the individual’s ability to plan and process motor tasks. A diagnosis is made by a clinical psychologist, an education psychologist, a pediatrician or occupational therapist.
What are the symptoms of Dyspraxia?
Like with many illnesses, symptoms do vary, but some of the more common symptoms are
- Poor balance
- Poor posture
- Differences in speech
- Perception problems
- Poor hand-eye co-ordination
Having a firm diagnosis, of any condition can cause mixed emotions one of relief that you now have a diagnosis and can put a name to the illness, the other one of fear that you wonder what the future holds, how will you cope, and the million other questions that go through your head.
One of the first things I did when my Daughter had her diagnosis (for her ME/Fibromyalgia), was to search the internet. I know this is often not recommended, but you can sit and fully take in the condition, and find groups and other support online.
These are a lifeline, to anyone who is going through this as you can talk to other parents, ask those stupid questions that just pop up in your head. You can laugh and cry with others, who will be the only ones who understand The support and advice you get from other parents, far out ways that of professionals, as they have been where you are, they have lived with it everyday.
If you are going through this, not just with Dyspraxia, but with any illness. Please do not do it alone, I can tell you from experience, if I did not have my Facebook group where I can go and laugh, cry, rant I would have gone crazy.
