  • Acquiring a provisional license

You must first acquire a provisional license before you can be eligible for the driving tests. You will also need a provisional license before you learn how to drive. You can apply for your provisional license either through post or online. When doing it offline, you will need to submit the D1 provisional application form to the DVLA.  In order to get the provisional license, you must meet certain requirements and criteria such as the minimum age, eyesight requirement, and must be a resident of the UK. You will also need a valid passport or other forms of identity.

  • Sitting for your theoretical exam

After getting your provisional driver’s license, you can sit for the theory exam. Of course, you will need to pass your theory exam to acquire your driver’s license. The theory exam comprises of two parts—a multiple choice test and hazard perception test.

The multiple choice test will require you to find the solutions of 50 questions and you will only be given 57 minutes to do so. Out of the 50 questions, you will need to get a minimum of 43 questions right. Be advised that there may be more than one correct answer for a particular question. This part of the exam focuses on a wide range of topics from road signs to questions on road safety. After you are done with the multiple choice test you can take a break of 3 minutes before starting the hazard perception test.

The hazard perception test will have you identify potential hazards on the road. You will be shown 14 video clips of around a minute each, that will have developing road hazards. You will need to identify the developing hazards as soon as possible as the faster you identify the developing hazard the higher the score you obtain.

Of course, you will need to then book your practical driving test and you can only be eligible for the test after passing the theory test. In order to move up your test to a new date, you can look for UK driving test cancellations. One of the easiest ways of doing so is through the software cancellation checker. The software allows you to check for cancelled slots and the software automatically searches for slots from the DVSA site and locates the cancelled slots that meet your requirement, in turn, saving you invaluable time.

The practical exam generally comprises of three parts—eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, and driving test. In order to pass the eyesight check, you must be able to read a license plate that is at least at a distance of 20 m. The vehicle safety questions, also popularly referred to as ¨show me, tell me¨ questions will have you answering questions about the mechanics of the vehicle. Finally, you will be given instructions to drive and reverse accordingly.
