The ups and downs of living with a teen

The Speculaas Spice Company

As it is now officially Christmas week, I thought I would start off with a lovely christmas post.

While I was busy looking for ideas for christmas and my gift guide, I was contacted by a lovely man called Steven from the Speculaas Spice Company, asking if I would be interested in trying their spice mix.  As I always do a lot of baking at christmas, I had to say yes.

Speculaas spice had become commonly available in the Netherlands in the 18th century, dutch bakers began to make their own special secret spice mix.  The spice mix is used to make biscuits and cakes, unfortunately like a lot of things, it became mass produced and the blends were lost for ever.

The Speculaas Spice Company, uses a blend of spice handed down from previous generations, and have now successfully found the right blend.

Spice Mix and man mould £9.99

I was sent the man mould and spice mix, they have a variety of moulds available as well as different sizes in the spice mix.

I was so excited when I received my parcel through the post, and the first thing that hit me was the aroma it was christmas in an envelope all ready.

To begin with you can not just use the mould straight away as you need to oil it, don’t be put off as the hard word does pay off.

I did make the dough mix (find the recipe on their website along with  may others), and I wrapped in clingfilm and placed in my fridge until the mould was ready for using.

The fun then starts as you roll out the dough and then use your mould to make your biscuits, the fun part is will it stick or will it come out ok.  I had my audience of my Daughter and my Mum and we made it a really fun experience.

The finished result

It might not be the greatest looking biscuit, but I am only a beginner and I think it comes with practice, but the smell and the flavour more than makes up for it.

Have you tried baking something different this christmas?

Thank you for visiting x

  1. I love spices and the man mould is a unique addition to the product. I think for a first try, you did well! And yes, a the ned of the day, it’s the smell and taste that counts 😉 Thanks for the review 🙂

    1. I have never used a wooden mould before, but once I had treated it, it was so easy to use and much nicer than plastic versions x
