Last year, my Daughter was a normal 12 year old going out with friends, going to school and enjoying life. When she became ill in December, and recently being diagnosed with CFS, her mobility has suffered.
It is not just the tiredness that we have to combat, having her better days where she can get out of bed and go to school, it is also her mobility, little things like getting out of bed is a real struggle, walking to the bathroom, or going downstairs is just too much, or just walking in general. Some days, when she has her ‘bambi’ days where she just can not walk, it is really hard. This is something a lot of people do not understand. They do not understand how a chronic illness can affect someone.
We also have my Dad, who suffered a stroke last year. Before his stroke he was very fit and active for his age, he had the odd knee pain but on the whole was fine. Since his stroke his mobility has slowed up, he walks a lot slower and needs a stick when out to steady him.
One huge hassle, we find with my Daughter is bathing, she used to love a shower. The last shower she had was 31st December 2015. I know this as this was the date she became ill. I could just say to her can you go and have your shower and that was it. Now bathing has become a real struggle, as she can not stand in shower due to her being so unsteady or it causes too much pain for her, or she is just too tired.
So we now opt for baths, as this is the easiest solution for her as she can sit down, she can be independent which at 12 is something she needs, and she has found a way of getting in and out of the bath safely.
This got me looking at solutions that we may need to think about, especially with summer coming and having showers is so much fresher. I was browsing Premier Bathrooms and have found some great ideas of how we can make bathing much easier for my Daughter and my Dad.
I found a great walk in shower with a seat, which would be ideal for the whole family to use, as we could shower as we normally do and my Daughter could sit down and still enjoy a shower, with the knowledge that she will be safe and not fall or suffer.
They also have ideas for a wet room, which is something my husband has wanted for a long time, which would be ideal.
There are some great ideas on Premier Bathrooms website and I have requested a brochure to see if this is something that we can look into doing in our home, and maybe my husband will get his wish.
