Breaking Barriers

I was recently asked if I would like to promote Breaking Barriers, as I had not heard of this before I did a little reading up, and was very happy to promote this.

Breaking Barriers, is all about breaking social barriers for the elderly.  This is something that is close to my heart as my parents are in their 70’s and what I find easy to do, they just do not understand. Likewise my stepsons live in a totally different world, to what it was like when I was their ages.

If you look at the Breaking Barriers website, you will see a short video on an elderly gentleman taking a leap and breaking down a barrier between the elderly and the younger generation.  The aim of Breaking Barriers is to help the elderly, break down the barriers and learn something new.

They give you ideas of something new you could learn, some of the suggestions are

  • Learn how to take great photos
  • Learn how to read faster
  • How to start a blog
  • How to start an Etsy store
  • Learn a new language
  • How to knit or bake

There are so many options you could choose, it could be something that you have always wanted to do but never had the chance to when you were working.

They also help you find community courses in your area, so it makes it easier to find a course you would love to do and sign up.

We all dream of when we retire, we work towards that day, when we no longer have to set the alarm and sit in the rush hour traffic.  We dream of lie ins, pottering around at home or in the garden, going out for nice walks or trips out, holidays when we want.  But in reality, although a lot of this is true, retirement can be lonely and boring if you do not have a hobby or something you really enjoy doing.  Breaking Barriers, shows the elderly that it is never too late to learn, and I think this is a great campaign and one that should be supported.

I am certainly going to be talking about this with my parents, especially since my Dad had a stroke last year, it has shown that you have to take the opportunities when you can.  They had just started playing bowls and was in the process of joining a team.  I am hoping that they continue when they start playing again.

I would love for the younger generation, to speak to their parents or grandparents, neighbours or friends about this great campaign.  As being elderly does not mean you social life and your life in general has to stop, for some it is only just beginning.

Great post, the best thing is to keep busy and find some things to do locally where you can meet new people.

Thank you, you hear of people when they retire never knowing how they had time to go to work, and others that feel they have lost their purpose. I think this is a great campaign

Such an important topic to highlight, I think. I’m not even 40 yet and I feel such a big divide between myself and the younger generations.

I think the divide is much more noticeable these days because of technology, I have just been speaking with one of my stepsons and his generation is totally different to when I was his age

It’s a shame that people assume as people get older that they can’t learn new things or take up a new hobby, this is a great idea
