My new series of Meet The Blogger, is becoming a huge hit. This is where each week I introduce to you a new Blogger for you to meet.
Today I am introducing Kate from Kate On Thin ice
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
My name is Kate and I have just turned 50 although feeling much younger. I am a law graduate, have worked for various charities and now blog to keep me sane. I am a parent to one teenage girl and two teenage boys who are all lovely and home-educated. I love writing, campaigning, cookery, reading and days out as I get bored easily. I am a huge music fan with eclectic tastes but love Freddie Mercury most of all. I had 10 years living with depression so am relishing life nowadays or at least most of the time.
HOW OR WHY DID YOU START BLOGGING?
My mum came for her first Christmas at my house in 2009. She said I would be happier if I was writing “even if you just keep a diary”. I was depressed and finding parenting so overwhelming feeling like an abject failure most of the time. I thought about getting a pretty diary but thought my young daughter would steal it and scribble on it so I looked up “online diary” and found out about blogging. I did not know what to write about but very soon after setting a blog up, my mum announced she had terminal cancer so I blogged about that along with how challenging I found parenting.
HAS YOUR BLOG CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED IT?
I blogged anonymously for years and it took a very long time for me to say who I was or to show a photograph of myself. I was in such a bad state that I felt if people saw what I looked like they would never read my blog again. Blogging and making online connections built up my confidence so I got a new domain name, trained myself up on blogging and starting networking and making money one baby step at a time.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FUNNIEST MOMENT SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR BLOG?
Not exactly funny but it amuses me that I went from scared to put myself out there to posing naked on my blog!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENT SINCE YOU STARTED BLOGGING?
In blogging terms, being misunderstood by a couple of bloggers but these things were very quickly resolved.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW BLOGGER STARTING OUT?
Be yourself – that way if you get readers, you know they like the real you and not some fake/trying to be perfect person. Perfection does not exist and people tend to buy into people who tell it like it is
WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT BLOGGING THAT YOU DID NOT REALISE WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED BLOGGING?
It surprised me that other people felt like I did and that reduced my isolation. It led to online friends and then offline friends to an extent too. It gave me a degree of personal power that I had not felt for decades.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
It used to be family stuff and although that still applies in recent times I am making new friends and enjoying nights out in bars.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY WHAT WOULD YOU DO FIRST?
Buy a house.
WHO IS YOUR BLOGGING HERO AND WHY?
There are so many but a heartfelt one is Hayley at Downssideup
