Newcastle – Amsterdam (and back again)

This week we celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. And decided to celebrate on a little trip away for a couple of nights, and found an overnight mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam with DFDS. We found a great deal and decided to treat ourselves.

As we live near London, and have never visited Newcastle before, we decided to travel down the day before and explore a bit of Newcastle at the same time.

We stayed in a Motel One hotel. We have never stayed in one of these hotels before, but anyone looking for a nice hotel. I would recommend trying them out.

Once we had checked in, we set out for a stroll around Newcastle. And we treated ourselves to a few drinks to start off our celebration

Time for cocktails

We found a great bar that was serving 2 for 1 cocktails. Having only ourselves to worry about treated ourselves to one or two.

We went back to our room to get ready for the evening, and decided to eat at a bar just across from the hotel called Yolo, as we were not starving we decided to have a sharing platter

The food was amazing and cooked perfectly.

The next day we had some time to spare before we needed to head to the port. We packed our case and checked out leaving our luggage at the hotel.  We wandered around taking in the sites of Newcastle, stopping for a coffee. Before it was time to venture back to the hotel to collect our luggage and wait for our taxi.

On our way to Amsterdam

Checking in was very simple and straight forward. We went to the desk with our reservation details and passports. Where we were given a boarding card, which is also your key to your cabin.  We could then you make your way onboard.  We found our cabin easily and once we had left our luggage we went for a walk around the boat

There is plenty to do on board, with a choice of restaurants to eat in or a cafeteria. One thing I will say is that eating on board is very expensive. From 17 euros for a burger and 35 euros for the eat as much as you like buffet.  Luckily we had eaten during the day and had snacks with us.  There are also plenty of bars and entertainment.

We sat on deck for a while enjoying the sea breeze. Before heading back to our cabin to get changed for the evening. Unfortunately, the sea was a little rough and I was the one who experienced sea sickness, a few times during the evening.

We had a few drinks and enjoyed the entertainment. Before calling it a night and resting up for our day ahead.

On Wednesday, we were woken with the Captain  telling us our arrival time into Amsterdam. We got up and headed off to get a coffee.  Today is also our wedding anniversary.

Once docked we headed to waiting transport to take us into Amsterdam Central for us to do our own thing for the day.

As we have visited Amsterdam a few times before, we decided to just go with the flow of what we wanted to do, as we have already seen the places we have wanted to before. We started off by having chips and frit sauce, these are amazing and a must try when visiting, next stop was to have a drink

We sat and watched the world go by, before we headed off again.  The next stop was pancakes, we have been to Amsterdam a few times, and still not had a dutch pancake, all I will say is they are lovely but very filling

After these we needed to walk them off a bit, and had a walk around the shops, before heading to our favourite bar Louis, which is sadly facing closing for what could be our final drink there.

It was then time to make our way back to the station for our transfer back to the ship to sail back home to Newcastle.

We had a great time, although very tiring.

Have you been to Amsterdam before?
