The Ultimate Guide to Bedroom Lighting

Like it or not, you do more in your bedroom than just sleep. It’s a place to relax and unwind after a long day at work, catch up on some reading or finally find out what all the fuss was about with the latest box set. As a result, you must be careful with the type of lighting that you use. Here’s everything that you need to know about lighting for your bedroom.

Lighting Required

The main thing to focus on with bedroom lighting is creating mood lighting. You can do this by choosing lights that have a dimmer switch, and focusing your lights in different areas rather than relying on one source of lighting.

Lighting Ideas

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is ideal for your ceiling lighting above the bed. You can use it to make a statement, and set the tone for the rest of the room’s decor. One current trend for pendant lighting is a round metal shade, such as rose gold. You could also opt for a geometric chandelier, or even a hanging bulb if you are influenced by Scandi interior design.

Table Lamps

Table lamps are so useful in a bedroom, as you can turn the light off without needing to get out of bed! You should focus on statement styles such as large shades and patterns. If you can find dimmable table lamps, this is even better as you can adjust the level of lighting according to whether you are reading, watching TV or just chatting.

Reading Lights

If you haven’t got a bedside table, or room for table lamps, try a reading light with an adjustable arm instead. They provide a bright focused light. However, try and opt for a warmer tone of lighting than a cool white, as this may keep you awake and disturb your sleep.

Fairy Lights

Fairy lighting is such an affordable way to update your bedroom lighting. Most supermarkets have fairy lights for a good price. If you’re planning to wrap them around your headboard, try battery operated lights which you can easily reach with a switch.

Spotlights around the Mirror

If you have a dressing table with a mirror in your room, a great way to add lighting to the area is to install spotlights around the mirror. They’ll make you feel like a film star!

Wall Sconces

If you are short on space, try installing wall sconces. They leave the floor free for furniture, and still provide an ideal amount of light. They don’t always have to look old-fashioned either, as plenty of lighting retailers now offer modern shapes for their wall sconces.

Led Lighting

If you’re wondering about how to make your bedroom lighting as energy efficient as possible, opt for LED lighting. LED lights waste barely any of their energy as heat, so all of their power is used on light. This means you can swap a high-watt halogen bulb for a low-watt LED bulb, and you should see a reduction in your energy bills gradually. LED lighting is also highly customisable and available in various shades from bright white to blue.

What lighting do you have in your bedroom?

As well as thinking about lighting, you also need to thinking about bedroom furniture and storage, and with online stores like Duke of Design it makes designing your dream bedroom even easier.
