I was very lucky recently, to be sent a package containing Branston pickles. If you are like me, you will always have a jar of pickle in your cupboard.
The box contained a lunchbag with ‘Bring Out The Branston’, always very handy for keeping things cool, Branston Original Pickle, new Branson Sweet Chilli Pickle, Branston Caramelised Onion Chutney, new Branston Rich & Smokey BBQ Sauce and Branston Hot Dog Relish.
I will start with the Branston Original Pickle, this really needs no introduction. I love boring old cheese and pickle sandwiches, but I also have it with cheese on toast, by spreading onto the toast before adding the cheese. I also love it with good old Cottage Pie either mixed in to add a different flavour, or just on the side.
Branston Sweet Chilli Pickle, I had not tried this before, but we do love sweet chilli sauces, so was very intrigued by this, and have to say we were not disappointed and it gives a new look at sandwiches or as a side. It is also lovely on a burger.
Caramelised Onion Chutney, I always have a jar of this in, we love this with baked Camembert and fresh crusty bread, or with a ploughman’s, or even to liven up a cheese sandwich with its sweetness.
Tomato and Red Pepper Relish, we love relishes and perfect for this time of year with a BBQ. I did not like this as to tomato in taste, but that is personal to me as I just do not like tomatoes, but everyone else loved this and we had it on our hotdogs at the weekend, and it really made a difference to just boring old mustard or ketchup.
Branston Rich & Smokey BBQ Sauce, my whole family love BBQ sauce but I do find they vary depending on what brand you buy, but we all loved this and livened up our meals.
Pickle and chutneys, are not just for adding to sandwiches, you really can do so much with them. In my house I am the one who does the baking or everyday family meals, and just adding some pickle or chutney into a casserole, or pie or anything else you may be cooking, will change the flavour. You can find a whole range of ideas for recipes here.
What are your favourite pickles or chutneys, and what is your favourite meal to have with them?
