Haywards Pickles Event

On Monday evening, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend an event for Haywards Pickles.  As this was the first blogging event I had managed to get too, I was nervous and excited and had no idea what I was going to find.  We all know what pickles are, but if like me they mainly find their way into my shopping at christmas.  I knew that the event was going to be about creating meals with the pickles, but I had no idea what we were going to be creating.

I attended the event with my husband, and on arrival we were greeted and offered a drink, it would have been rude to refuse a glass of wine :), we were then left to look around and mingle with the other bloggers who were also attending, and we also got our first glimpse of what we would be creating.

We started the evening with a game to break the ice of picked onion roulette, with a variety of pickled onions and one being a hot and spicy one, we thought we had been clever as we saw a piece of chilli on an onion, unfortunately my husband was the unlucky one.

Between us all, we would split into groups and create 6 dishes, luckily we had a wonderful host called Denise who showed us 3 of the dishes.

Firstly Denise made Piccalilli Curry, I will say that neither myself or my husband are fans of piccalilli, so both thought it would be awful, as did a few others.  I am first to admit when I am wrong, and it was gorgeous and I will be creating this at home, the piccalilli really did work.

Next up was Easy Goat’s Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart, I have never thought about using pickled onions in this way, but they cooked up lovely and this is another trick that I will be using.

The final dish that Denise made was Barbecue Steak and Slaw, this is also the dish we decided to cook as well, it is so easy and the slaw was one of the nicest I have tried in a long time.

So after our cooking demonstration it was time to get into our groups and try to create our own dish.  So as I went off to collect the ingredients for our team, I left my husband to start preparing, and then it was on with the cooking.

As you can see we caused a bit of a stir, but it was all under control, this is a great summer dish, very easy to prepare and make and delicious as well.

After we had all prepared our various dishes it was time for the tasting of them all

You can find the recipes here

Piccalilli Curry

Barbeque Steak and Slaw

Brazillian Seafood Salad

Griddled Tuna Salad with Gherkin Dressing

Brie and Beetroot Ciabatta Slices

Easy Goat’s Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart

There are also loads of other recipes to try out on the Haywards website

I can honestly say, I never knew you could do so much with a jar of pickles, I know I am going to be busy in the kitchen now.

I am lucky and did not try the hot and spicy :), luck was obviously on my side. We can not stand piccalilli, but it was amazing in the curry and would recommend it.

I love anything pickled if I’m honest, apart from eggs and we always have an array of beetroot, onions and gherkins in the fridge! I’m definitely going to look through these recipes and see what else I can do with them rather than just eating them straight out of the jar! x
